Kethel – 13-07-19 When I returned to my car from my little trip to Kethel, Schiedam, Netherlands, I saw this beautiful tree in bloom. Sometimes you look for grand things and the little all of a sudden pop into your eyes when least expected. The actual tree was in no interesting area but the very shape struck me by lightning. I took a picture and decided to do it only now (in summer). I tried to capture the flow of the flowering tree and of course in my roundish style. Nature design with lake, forest and mountains

Lāʻie Point is a beautiful lookout on the windward coast of Oahu. On the left hand side is an offshore sea arch which is a seabird sanctuary. My print shows the right hand side, looking into the direction of Kaneohe Bay. There is a legend of Lāʻie Point in which this land was called Laniloa and it was once a "Mo'o", a giant Lizard.

A little off from the usual tourist hotspots, Shepherds gutter in the New Forest (Hampshire, UK) has a number of these glades that feel just a little enchanted. Running nearby is a stream in a winding channel that no doubt gives the place its name. You'll find all this on the road that passes through Bramshaw. I've painted this in oil on a 16x12 inch board.

Return to the Spot The second one of Estate ‘Oosterbeek’ this week. Yesterday’s was my graphite pencil drawing ‘Oosterbeek – 07-04-20’. I quite liked it and so I returned today, trying to shake off this corona blues. This time I chose a specific spot in the park where there is a bend in a brook running through it. I found the reflections of the tree just enough to give my drawing something extra. It gave me some rectangulars counterbalancing all things organic. They also avoid the scenery for becoming to clotted with medium toned subtle branches, leafs and grasses. This I always find very troublesome to deal with. In fact Spring can be a tedious season. A Beautiful Spot There is this specific spot in Voorburg at the beginning of the Herenstraat where it is particulary beautiful. There is a small ditch in front of an old mansion with a big tree in front of it, making it a rather English site than typical dutch. I loved doing the cast shadows in this one and they make me long for summer days during which I can depict them wherever I may be the next coming months. Park ’t Loo On my way to my students in Voorburg I come across Park ‘t Loo that had a reshape last year. Some natural river banks were created for birds to nest. The variety of vegetation also is extended. There is a herbal garden and some lovely flower beds. I once heared Princess Marianne van Oranje-Nassau used to walk this park from her home to Palace Huis Ten Bosch. Much has changed though ever since I guess. Sun Shimmers Through In this time of year I love to see the sun shimmer through leaves. It causes me to see a whole range of blue, yellow and ocre kind of greens. Beek-Ubbergen Just outside Nijmegen towards the German border there are two places of beauty called the Ooij Polder and the start of the ‘Nijmeegse Heuvelrug’, part of the Lower Rhine Heights. For people living outside The Netherlands it must be a sorry sight but at least there are hills and I know them very well for whole my life. A Welcome Change Today, the last day of August, I went to Clingendael with my dear friend Michelle. It’s a welcome change from drawing art deco models, such as the last one. We were out there to take some landscape pictures and to do some drawing. Quite nice weather I must say. It’s still summer, no wind and plenty of sun although not as hot as last week. Perfect for outdoor sketching. However, when I arrived at the estate I realized I forgot my camping chairs. Those are unconfortable to transport by bike anyway. The only option left was to find a suitable bench in the woods or tree trunk to sit on. Condition number two is to have an interesting motif in front of your eyes. My Niece And it so happens my niece Lilian turned out to be a great photographer. Lo and behold, artistry runs deep in the veins of our family and I asked her to use a beautiful photo she took of a treeline in Puiflijk, near to where she lives. Direct Cause Direct cause to draw this one, next to the photo, is a discussion I had with a friend of mine (Piet-Jan) about the meaning of ‘The Star and Crescent’, being a symbol in islamic traditions, only for us to find out the invention of the very symbol stretches back another 1000 years prior to islam.
