It's a cool autumn day, and this father is spending a pleasant afternoon in bustling Greenwich Village taking his baby for a walk.

A ladder, seemingly to nowhere. I was reminded of Jacob’s dream whereby a ladder appears, a reminder of heaven above, and of the promise that exile will end. The tree, gnarled and ancient, also put me in mind of biblical gardens, of olives and jasmine, of hot desert winds, of red rocks that echo the howl of the jackal. The courtyard envelops us in shade, above a glorious sky of blue, and below the terracotta colours of the sandy walls. The tree is rich in olive and yellow hues, the wood almost pink.

This is my illustration of How water makes its way back to the house in India in the Village settings, by ladies getting water pots from a well, or using a hand pump.

The Dean Village sits quietly below the Dean Bridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith. It has always fascinated me, part Victorian and part Scottish Baronial, quiet, secluded, tranquil. A place for Christmas morning walks, for a cut through to Stockbridge and the haunted St Bernard’s Well. It is achingly pretty, quaint, and calming. This work is rich in heat, in colour and in detail.

In the Village, in New York, still jet lagged but too excited to care, I wander around and experience the Village. There is a scent of tar, of carbolic soap perhaps, and the temping smells of pizza dough in the oven. The buildings are brown, red, like a Vermont autumn, evocative of the 19th century. I admire a large yellow sign, cutting through the scene insistently. This work is rich in contrast, in shadow and light. It is a perfect addition to any collection of American-themed art and a great souvenir of New York.
