This is a charcoal and acrylic painting inspired by the beauty of a tree.

The Whitsundays are a group of tropical islands located off the coast of Central Queensland, Australia.

Ok, there may be more than just one tree on top of One Tree Hill on Hamilton Island, but this one seemed to be a pretty good candidate since it was all on its own. What a perfect place this was for star watching -- there was hardly any light pollution despite us being on a resort island!

We couldn't have asked for a better day at Whitehaven Beach. The beach really lived up to its reputation--even in July it was a nice temperature to swim in, and it was even better just to lie on the beach and take in the scene!

Hamilton Island, stretching from the qualia resort in the foreground back to Passage Peak, the island's highest point, as seen from our helicopter as we came in to land after an amazingly scenic 20-minute flight.

The view from Passage Peak on Hamilton Island is amazing. It's only a 2.6km walk to this spot -- the highest peak on the island -- and you get views stretching across the Whitsundays and all the way back to the mainland. This view is from just below the peak itself looking back on Catseye Beach and some of the main resorts on the island. Look at that reef!

One Tree Hill is one of the most popular spots on Hamilton Island to watch the sunset, not only because it has a perfect view across to the west and the mainland, but also because a small pop-up bar appears there every night. I was a big fan of the frozen cocktails!

Lover's Cove was one of my favourite spots on Daydream Island, one of the many resort islands in the Whitsundays. By day, we could walk down the coral beach straight into an ocean teeming with reef life; by evening, we could watch gorgeous sunsets like this one over the mainland; and by night we could sit and listen to the lapping of the waves under a dusting of fairy lights and stars.

I never thought I'd be able to shoot a 30 second exposure of a tree without it moving, but that's how calm our first night on Hamilton Island was. A stark change from a few days later, when the winds were 20-25 knots!

On our last day on Hamilton Island, we decided to take the plunge and book a helicopter ride over Whitehaven Beach. It was 20 minutes of beautiful island and reef views, capped by this amazing scene at Whitehaven's Hill Inlet.

I captured this shot just after sunset on the south side of Daydream Island. It was quite unexpected to get this view as we'd already watched the sun set from Lover's Cove on the other side of the island and were just on our way to dinner when we noticed these reflections!
