Dating to the Seventeenth century, a book of magic and astrological charting, occultism and astrology remained very popular during this time, especially with scientists and mathematicians, and studying these subjects helped lead into scientific advances.

The Geographer, 17th century artwork by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). This artwork was finished in 1669, and forms a pair with The Astronomer (V700/157), also by Vermeer. The original is in the Steadelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt, Germany. The two paintings depict the scientific revolution that was taking place in 17th-century Europe. In geography, increasingly accurate maps were being made. It is thought that van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) is the person used as the model for this painting. It shows a geographer holding a pair of dividers as he leans over a map. The terrestrial globe (upper centre) was made by Jodocus Hondius in 1600, and is a twin to the celestial globe in The Astronomer. At upper right, is part of a ma...

Plague doctor. 17th century artwork titled 'Doktor Schnabel von Rom' (Beak Doctor from Rome). The text is in Latin. The costume's bronze mask contained aromatic herbs and reduced exposure to 'bad air', as did gloves and an oiled undergarment and cloak. Bubonic plague (the Black Death) affected Europe from the 1340s to the 1700s, killing millions. This German artwork, by Paul Furst (1608-1666), is based on an earlier work by J. Columbina, and dates from 1656. This version is from 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).

New Netherland. 17th-century map of the Dutch colony of New Netherland (yellow), which existed in north-eastern North America from 1614 to 1667, and again from 1673 to 1674. The title is in Latin, referring to New Belgium (another name for New Netherland), New England and Virginia. The region later became the colonies and then states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut. The inset (lower right) shows an early New York City (re-named New York in 1664): 'Nieuw Amsterdam op t eylant Manhattans' (New Amsterdam on the island of Manhatttan). New Amsterdam is at left of Long Island (red, centre). Published in Amsterdam in 1685, this map by Nicolaes Visscher (1649-1702) is thought to date from the early 1650s.

17th century Arthur

Pencil Cottage Number of views as of 4th May 2017 = 590. This quaint 17th century thatched cottage and shop lies at the heart of Shanklin Old Village on the Isle of Wight (just off the south coast of England). In Victorian times, the village attracted poets and writers (including Keats and Longfellow) and it is likely that this is where they purchased their supplies of stationery! Smuggling was rife in the village in olden times, with contraband brought ashore on Shanklin beach and smuggled up through the 'chine' (a wooded glen leading up to the village). The cellar of the cottage contains the entrance to one of several smugglers tunnels that run through the village. Date: 31st October 2012.
