1954 Tapestries

What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.

By the '50s, drag racing was becoming more organized, largely due to the efforts of the American Hot Rod Association. Dirt fields sprouted bleachers and concession stands, and then beautiful paved tracks with safety fences and elaborate pit areas as drag racing became big business. Being a racing-crazy state, Indiana was not immune to this, and so a famous track was born in 1954 in Hobart, Indiana, just east of I-65 on the north side of US 30. For tourism purposes and making it easier for folks to find, the track was said to be in the much larger city of Gary, Indiana which was just a few miles north of Hobart. The track became a favorite for fans and drivers alike and quickly became known as the place "where the great ones run."

The Pike in Long Beach was a seaside amusement area that offered a variety of entertainment options to the public. The streets were bustling with a mix of locals, sailors, and sea merchants who made Long Beach their port of call. The Pike had everything from bathhouses and arcades to food stands and fortune-tellers, and of course, tattoo parlors. At its height, The Pike was home to a dozen tattoo parlors and had quite a reputation for being a seedy destination. In 1954, The Pike changed its name to Nu-Pike in an attempt to rebrand itself to keep up with new family-friendly theme parks that had opened nearby. There was a time when pens weren’t disposable and you would actually take them into a pen shop to have them serviced and repaired. The Pen Doctor was one such business based in the small town of Fairhope, Alabama where you could drop you pen off and have whatever ailed it taken care of… no idea if they offered service loaners, though.

KILLERS FROM SPACE 1 (1954)

The Eifelrennen Meisterschaftslauf was an annual motor race held in Germany's Eifel mountain region from 1922 to 2003. In the inaugural race, all vehicles were allowed – cars, motorbikes, and even bicycles with supporting engines. Over 100 entrants showed up to compete in the 10 lap event. The track was not paved, and muddy after heavy rains. In 1924 to 1926, the races for 2 and 4 wheels were held on separate days, and classes were introduced. Still, several fatal accidents happened. Even spectator stands collapsed, caused by stormy weather. The unsatisfying safety situation led to the construction of the Nürburgring circuit in the area, which was inaugurated on Saturday, 18 June 1927. This design celebrates the 1954 event.
