The 1st Armored Division—nicknamed "Old Ironsides"—is a combined arms division of the United States Army. The division is part of III Corps, with its base of operations in Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. It was the first armored division of the U.S. Army to see battle in World War II.

The 1st Cavalry Division ("First Team") is a combined arms division and is one of the most decorated combat divisions of the United States Army, as well as the other four branches of the U.S. military.[2][not in citation given] It is based at Fort Hood, Texas. It was formed in 1921 and served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cat Gulf War, with the Stabilization Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the Iraq War, and in the War in Afghanistan (2001–present).

In 1966, the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry (Armored Reconnaissance), went to the Republic of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War (1966–1972) operating in the II Corps Area as part of the 4th Infantry Division. The 1st Armored Regiment, part of the 1st Armored Division, was one of the first American units to engage in combat in World War II in the North African Campaign. On 8 November 1942, the 1st Armored Regiment landed at St Leu, French Morocco and captured Tafaraoui Airfield later in the day after overrunning a battery of Vichy French guns. The next day, the regiment fought well against a counterattack by French tanks and managed to destroy 14 French R35 tanks, for the loss of 1 US tank and 1 US KIA.

The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division is a Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. First organized in 1942, as Combat Command A, 1st Armored Division, the unit has fought in North Africa and Italy in World War 2, as well as 4 tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom. As the 3rd Constabulary Regiment, the brigade conducted stability operations in Germany after World War 2. After service at Fort Hood and in Germany during the Cold War, the brigade conducted three peacekeeping rotations in the Balkans (Bosnia, Macedonia and Kosovo), Combat Service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 61st Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Army traditionally associated with the 5th Infantry Division. From June 2 to July 9, elements from 1/61st Inf and 1/77th Armor combined with units from the 3rd and 9th Marine Regts and units from ARVN Forces formed Joint Task Force Guadalcanal to conduct operation Utah Mesa in the Khe Sanh area. Serving from July 1968 until 1971 defending the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone in northern Quảng Trị Province

On February 24, 1991, the battalion moved across the Iraqi border in support of Operation Desert Storm and fired their first round at the enemy since 1945. In 2004, the battalion deployed with the 1st Brigade Combat Team (Ready First), 1 Armored Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Baghdad and again in 2006 to Tal Afar and Ramadi.
