Acme Tapestries

The Acme Brewery of San Francisco was established in 1907 by Leopold Schmidt, owner of the Olympia Brewing Company of Tumwater, WA. Acme's story actually begins with Schmidt's entry into the San Francisco market. In Oct. 31, 1902, Schmidt hired Aherns, Pein & Bullwinkel as San Francisco agents for his Olympia Beer Company. In Feb. 1903, after a limited introduction of his product, Schmidt shipped 100 casks, each packed with six doz. quarts of bottled beer, to his agents. This was followed by repeat orders, creating the certainty that a S.F. market was assured for Olympia Beer.

The Acme Brewery was incorporated on April 11, 1907, with Leopold F. Schmidt, president; William Schuldt, secretary and manager; and Jacob P. Rettenmayer as both treasurer brewmaster. The beers became a local favorite before eventually making their way out to a national audience. Acme survived prohibition like many breweries by manufacturing sodas as well as legal near beer versions of their brews, which were popular as they were easily spiked by consumers with grain alcohol to get something closer to the real thing. The brewery went on to survive two world wars before finally closing their doors in 1972 as completion from larger national breweries put the squeeze on their business.

Safeway, Inc. is an American supermarket chain founded in 1915. It is a subsidiary of Albertsons, having been acquired by private equity investors led by Cerberus Capital Management in January 2015.

It's hard to think of the center of the motion picture industry being anywhere other than Hollywood, but that was the case in the early 1900s as movie studios were setting up shop around New York City. While the first motion picture camera, known as a Kinetograph, was invented in 1890, it wasn't until about 20 years later that movie cameras really came into their own and made movie production a reality for even the smallest studio. Of course, with all these new studios shooting films in and around NYC, it only made sense that the city's oldest camera shop would be onboard. From sales and service to rentals and film stock, Willo's did it all and worked hand in hand with the burgeoning motion picture industry to make Hollywood happen.

Speedwell was a brand of bicycle manufactured by Bennett & Wood, a firm established by Charles W. Bennett and Charles R. Wood in 1882 in Sydney. As motorcars and motorcycles became available Bennett and Wood entered the motor trade. They built and sold the Speedwell bicycle and the Speedwell and Acme motorcycles. The Speedwell motorcycle was built in the early 1900s.
