Celebrate the Fabulous Ash Vegas...ahem we mean Ashington!

The Queen Elizabeth II Country Park is situated in Ashington in Northumberland. The park was once the site of one of the biggest colliery spoil heaps in Europe, but following the closure of the Woodhorn mine in 1981 the old buildings were converted into a heritage centre and the spoil heap removed by Northumberland County Council leaving the present lake for recreational purposes. These yellow irises are common around the edges of the lake.

This beautiful Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) was photographed among the reeds on Queen Elizabeth II Lake, Ashington, Northumberland. These birds are usually very skittish, but this one was fairly co-operative and allowed me to get quite close.
