In 1923, George Wight opened an auto parts yard on Gage Avenue in Bell, California. The shop was a combination of salvage yard and machine shop, and it catered to the race crowd in the early days of dry lakes racing. George began removing speed equipment from the junkers he bought. George sold the speed equipment separately under what eventually became Bell Auto Parts. Bell Auto Parts is one of the first, if not the first, speed shop in the United States and it didn't take long before it was the center of racing and rodding activities for the greater Los Angeles area.

BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS RACING

The Bonneville Salt Flats are a densely packed salt pan in Tooele County in northwestern Utah. A remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, it is the largest of many salt flats west of the Great Salt Lake. Bonneville Speedway (also known as the Bonneville Salt Flats Race Track) is an area of the Bonneville Salt Flats northeast of Wendover, Utah, that is marked out for motor sports. The salt flats were first used for motor sports in 1912, but did not become truly popular until the '30s when Ab Jenkins and Sir Malcolm Campbell competed to set land speed records.

Venolia Pistons entered the speed equipment market back in 1946 and went on to play an integral part throughout decades of racing history. From countless speed records, both on land and at sea, to numerous national and international racing championships, Venolia Pistons has more than proven their mettle.

Tom Beatty was a dry lakes racer who later became a speed shop owner. There were a number of speed manufacturers during the 1950s producing racing cams, heads, etc. and Tom worked for a number of them and truly honed his craft. Tom Beatty Automotive Engineering made all kinds of engines for all kinds of go-fast applications, so whether you were breaking records at Bonneville, tearing up the quarter mile in Fremont, or forcing buddy to hang on for dear life at Lake Elsinore, Tom was your guy. From manifolds to superchargers, Tom made it to his exacting specifications which resulted in engines that ran stronger and pulled harder than anything the big name builders were making.

As an avid dry lakes racer, Paul Schiefer developed his own clutches and flywheels that could take the abuse involved in propelling his racers to increasingly higher top speeds. He set up shop in 1947 and began manufacturing his clutches and flywheels for his fellow dry lakes enthusiasts and as word got out, his products became popular in other motorsports well. By 1956 Schiefer was mass-producing explosion-proof clutches which quickly became the clutch of choice for hardcore drag racers and by the mid-'60’s, the company had become the single largest manufacturer of specialty racing drive train components in the world.

Weber Speed Equipment started out in 1945 as Weber Tool Company, making some of the first aluminum performance fly wheels. As the company continued to expand their speed parts catalog with cams, clutches, and heads, becoming increasingly popular with hot rodders and racers alike, they changed their name to Weber Speed Equipment. Aside from making high quality, extreme high-performance parts, one of their biggest claims to fame was their 'blow up proof' guarantee on their flywheels, something that was a big draw to those pushing higher horsepower and revs in the early days of drag racing.

Speed-O-Motive got their start manufacturing custom pistons for flathead racing engines, but eventually began distributing speed parts and offering high-performance engine rebuild kits for pretty much every V8 application out there. If you couldn't swing by their Los Angeles area shop, you could mail order your parts, even complete engines after they begin offering turn key balanced and blueprinted crate racing engines. These crate strokers all ran Speed-O-Motive racing pistons, and the rest of the build leveraged top shelf goodies from other manufacturers.

The Ardun OHV conversion for the venerable Ford flathead was designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov and his brother Yuri as the “Ardun Engine Company of New York” in the late forties. By then the “old flatty” had become the engine of choice for the burgeoning hot rod craze and dry lake racers recognized the potential to extract some additional power from their flatheads. In 1951 a group of hot rodders took their black deuce to Bonneville setting a C/Street Roadster record of 162.61 Mph and the unofficial title of noisiest car on the salt. Later that year, an engine dyno test recorded 303 Hp @ 5250 rpm with 25% fuel which were big numbers for the day.
