Vincent Motorcycles was a British manufacturer of motorcycles from 1928 to 1955. The business was established by Philip Vincent who bought an existing manufacturing name (HRD), initially renaming it as Vincent HRD and producing his own motorcycles as HRD did previously with engines purchased as complete assemblies from other companies. From 1934, two new engines were developed as a single-cylinder in 500 cc and v-twin 1,000 cc capacities. Production grew from 1936, with the most famous models being developed from the original designs after the War period in the late 1940s. The 1948 Vincent Black Shadow was at the time the world's fastest production motorcycle.

Enfield Cycle Co. Ltd., like many early motorcycle manufacturers, has its origins in bicycles, but it also supplied firearms parts to the British government’s Royal Small Arms Factory which is likely the source of their 'made like a gun' tagline. It created its brand name simply by combining the rather impressive-sounding 'Royal' and the name of the town in which the factory was located - Enfield, England. Their first motorcycle was essentially one of their existing production bicycles with an engine bolted to the front downtube that was produced in 1901. The company went on to create numerous models over the years, but one of the most notable ones holds the title as the longest-lived production motorcycle design in history - the Bullet.

Birmingham Small Arms Co. Ltd. (BSA) was a major British industrial combine, a group of businesses manufacturing military and sporting firearms; bicycles; motorcycles; cars; buses and bodies; steel; iron castings; hand, power, and machine tools; coal cleaning and handling plants; sintered metals; and hard chrome process. After the Second World War, BSA did not manage its business well, and a government-organized rescue operation in 1973 led to a takeover of BSA's operations. The few business areas that survived this process disappeared into the ownership of other businesses.
