The 9F was designed for use on fast, heavy freight trains over long distances. It was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Great Britain.

A black and White image of 46100 Royal Scot photographed on the Severn Valley Railway at Highley Station in October 2015. The engine driver is offering the single track working token to the Signalman who is just out of shot. Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Royal Scot was built in 1927 by London Midland & Scottish Railway for the express service from London to Birmingham, Manchester through to Glasgow. She was chosen to appear on behalf of Britain at the 1933 'Century of Progress' exhibition in the USA and toured the USA and Canada covering 11 194 miles.

A black and white image of a damp misty autumn day on the North Yorkshire Moors as LMS Black 5 "Eric Treacy" leaves Goathland with a full head of steam! The Black Fives were a mixed traffic locomotive, a "do-anything go-anywhere" type, designed by William Stanier and several members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, with eighteen of the type making it into preservation.

The 720 indicates this is the "Up" train, IE the return to London. The BR Standard Class 7, otherwise known as the Britannia Class, is a class of 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive designed for mixed traffic duties.

A black and white image of 5428 LMS Class 5 or "Black Five" as the class is lovingly called. 5428 is a steam locomotive built in 1937 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). In 1967 it was withdrawn from British Rail service, preserved and named Eric Treacy after the former Bishop of Wakefield, an eminent railway photographer. A black and white image of Princess Coronation Class 6233 Duchess of Sutherland steam locomotive built in 1938 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). It was built for express passenger services, including the Royal Scot service between London and Glasgow. It was retired from British Railways in 1964 and was saved from being scrapped by Billy Butlin who displayed it at the Heads-of-Ayr holiday camp in Scotland. It's now fully restored in LMS "Crimson Lake" and photographed here on the Severn Valley Railway at Highley Station in Shropshire, England.

A black and white image of Tornado on loan to the Severn Valley Railway leaving Highley station on an Autumn afternoon in October 2015. Tornado is a Peppercorn class A1 Pacific 4-6-2 completed in 2008 to the original specification. It's the only example of an LNER Peppercorn Class A1 in existence, as all the original A1 locomotives were scrapped without preservation.

This Locomotive is on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway at the southern end of Lake Windermere, running along the Leven Valley. Only two Fairburn 4MT Locomotives have survived into preservation and they are both based on this railway!
