In 1906, Grover 'Cleve' Harrell started what was to become the Yellow Cab Company with horse-drawn carriages in Oklahoma City. Harrell's older brother, A. J. arrived, soon followed by their younger brother Marvin, and the three went into business together. In 1929, the Harrell brothers established Yellow Transit Freight Lines to serve small manufacturers for whom express rates were prohibitive. Eventually the partnership dissolved, and A. J. took control of the freight lines, which he kept small until 1952 when an ownership group bought the freight company. During this time, Yellow pioneered the concept of consolidating small shipments into trailer loads. In 1968, the company name was changed to Yellow Freight System.

Billie Joe "B.J." McKay was an owner-operator trucker who travels the country's highways in a red and white Kenworth K-100 Aerodyne with his pet chimpanzee, Bear. In the pilot movie, it is stated that he had spent two years in Vietnam as a medical helicopter pilot, had been a captain, and earned the Distinguished Service Cross. He was a prisoner of war at the Hanoi Hilton for four months in 1973 after his helicopter went down over the DMZ. Episodes typically deal with B.J. uncovering or getting mixed up with crime in the area he's traveling through, and a local resident — usually, a young, beautiful woman — appealing to him for help.

White Motor Company was an American truck manufacturer based in Cleveland, Ohio, in existence from 1900 to 1980. The company started out manufacturing everything from bicycles to sewing machines, but after WWI, began focusing on trucks, selling off, or simply eliminating unrelated legacy lines. Not long after changing focus, the company was soon responsible for selling 10 percent of all trucks made in the U.S. Although White produced all sizes of trucks from light delivery to heavy semis, the decision was made after WWII to produce only heavy truck lines. White acquired several other truck manufacturing companies to grow the company post-Vietnam, but a series of unfavorable acquisitions and mergers left the company insolvent by 1980.

In 1936, Dick Cantlay and Joe Tanzola's trucking company purchased Western Truck Lines which allowed them to move into dry freight and then 20 years later, the purchase of Gillette Motor Freight had them changing names to Western Gillette Motor Freight and reaching all the way to Chicago and serving 1,400 cities in between. By the ’70s, the company had over 2,000 employees operating out of 52 company terminals in 15 States and a fleet of over 1,000 trucks. Cash flow problems started to rear their heads and in 1976 the company was sold to Roadway, marking the untimely end of Western Gillette Motor Freight.

T-Shirt iron-ons from the 70s and 80s have a truly unique style that never really caught on in any other medium, but their fragile nature makes them tough to find decades later. Olson Transportation Co. was founded in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1927. Unlike most carriers that tried to grow and expand to cover as much territory as possible, Olson was small by design. Until their closure in 1968, they operated an efficient overnight LTL freight network that connected all of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan with Chicago. Their yellow and brown trucks were a common sight throughout the region and known by locals as the most reliable way to get their goods to market in Chicago.

Lenderink Transport was founded in 1917 in Zwolle, Holland as a horse and carriage carrier. Over the years, Lenderink grew into an industry-leading trucking company with top-notch drivers and well maintained late model equipment operating throughout Europe. Lenderink's primary customers were in the marine engine industry, though also maintained customers in the automotive and heavy equipment space as well. Despite being one of the strongest trucking firms in Europe, as a result of the global economic crisis in 2008, loads slowed to the point that the company was forced into bankruptcy in July 2009.

Reddaway Truck Line was founded in 1919 by William Arthur "Art" Reddaway in Oregon City, Oregon with a single Model T truck. He managed the company with his wife, Ethel, and later, his son, Walter, succeeded him and led the company until his retirement in 1970. Reddaway Truck Line ran the I-5 corridor hauling general commodity and LTL freight between Alaska and California with 20 terminals along the way. In 1989, the firm was brought out by an Australian conglomerate and at that time, the truck line had over 800 pieces of company owned equipment and were one of the largest carriers on the West Coast.
