Outdoors Wisconsin • Cambrian Sandstone Cliff: Wisconsin is a midwestern U.S. state with coastlines on 2 Great Lakes (Michigan and Superior). Amazing sandstone cliffs attract visitors to Wisconsin Dells and the Apostle Islands. This distinctive red sandstone, easily recognizable for its color and texture, sandstone was formed during the late Cambrian period, which began about 500 million years ago. The Dells are located right in the country's heartland along a magnificent stretch of river way that has grabbed tourists' attention since the 1850s. A species of trilobite from the Upper Ordovician, about 445 million years ago, it was discovered in 1838 by an American geologist and paleontologist named James Hall, in the Beecher’s Trilobite Bed in Rome, New York. These specimens were particularly well preserved with even soft body parts preserved in iron pyrite (fools gold). The fossilisation was so good that scientists were able to study their legs, gills, antennae, digestive system, and even some eggs. As a result of this exquisite preservation, this species is often referenced as the standard for scientific text describing trilobite anatomy. Triarthus was a small animal, on’y about 2 inches in length, but that is pretty average among most species of trilobite.

A trilobite found in deposits near Saint Petersburg Russia. It first appeared on the fossil record about 500 million years ago, and died out around 390 million years ago, it was discovered around 1845. Sadly there isn’t as much specific info on this one, but there are more than 20,000 currently identified Trilobite species, and not all of them has as much info as others.

Ocean inhabitants

Palaeozoic arthropods. Artwork depicting extinct marine arthropods from the Cambrian period of the Palaeozoic era, (between around 500 and 300 million years ago). The organisms seen here have been reconstructed from fossils found in the Burgess Shale deposits in British Columbia, Canada. The organisms depicted include Opabinia (top, stalked eyes) and Pikaia (long, thin at lower centre). Several trilobites are also depicted (flat- shaped, centre left and lower right). During the Cambrian period as many as fifty separate major phyla emerged suddenly. These occurence is referred to as the Cambrian explosion.

Yamnuska is an Albertan icon, the gateway to the Bow Valley, and it was also my first hike! Because of my history with the mountain, I was thrilled when we studied it in geology class - I had to give my sketch a new life.

Barmouth Bridge is a Grade II listed wooden railway viaduct across the River Mawddach in West Wales. It is 764 yards long and was opened in 1867. This is looking out to sea across the single track bridge on a sunny late April afternoon, having been grey and cloudy when I had arrived in Barmouth only a hour beforehand.

This is a depiction of the fossil hallucigenia, a Cambrian era ancestor of today’s velvet worms. Hallucigenia fossils were originally discovered in the Burgess Shale, a famous Cambrian-age fossil deposit in the Canadian Rockies. Paleontologists have been very confused about how to classify this lovely little worm as it was unclear whether it’s protective spikes were legs or it’s wobbly legs were tentacles!
