Mount Carmel, abode of the great Old Testament prophet Elijah and his disciples, was already a sacred place in early Christianity; in the 12th century hermits and hermits settled there. The Order of the Carmelites was founded under the leadership of the French hermit Berthold.

Thérèse von Lisieux (Theresia of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face) was a French defeated Carmelite. She is worshiped in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint and a church teacher. Her parents Zélie and Louis Martin were also canonized in 2015.
