Cell division. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of a human epithelial cell (centre) during the late anaphase stage of mitosis. Mitosis is the cycle of replication and division by which new body cells are formed. Here the chromosomes (blue) of the parent cell have duplicated and the pairs are being pulled apart by microtubules (spindles, green) to opposite poles of the cell, in a process called cytokinesis. When the cell has split, two identical daughter cells are formed.

The two chromatids that form each chromosome (blue) are being pulled to opposite ends of the cell. The actin microfilam- ents (red) and tubulin microtubules (green) of the cytoskeleton maintain the cell's structure. The two centrosomes (pink dots, centre left & right) organize the microtubules that move the chromosom- es around the cell. Mitosis produces two identical daughter cells. The cellular proteins are indicated by fluorescent markers: DAPI (blue, cell nuclei), tubulin (green), GM1 (red). The central island of flat cells (green) contains dividing cells and is surrounded by differentiated cells. Prints from my original abstract acrylic painting on paper. Inspired by learning about cell division during biology and medical school. These whimsical bundles of DNA are chilling out in telophase (end stage of cell division).

Plant cell mitosis. Light micrograph of a root tip cells squash preparation from an onion (Allium sp.) showing cell division (mitosis). From left to right: the chromosomes condense and appear as long thread-like structures (prophase). They then align along the centre of the cell (metaphase). Each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids that separate and are pulled to opposite ends of the cell (anaphase). Nuclear membranes then form around the two daughter nuclei as the chromosomes de-condense (telophase). Magnification: x1000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.

Staphylococcus bacteria. Colour transmission electron micrograph of sectioned Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. They are Gram-positive coccal (spherical) bacteria. At centre a bacterium in cross section is seen with its thick cell wall (green). Above and below this bacterium are obliquely sectioned bacteria showing the irregular surface of the bacterial cell walls. Staphylococcus aureus commonly occurs on healthy human skin and mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth. It may, however, become pathogenic.
