Cellular automata are generated using certain 'rules" that a computer program follows. An example of a rule may be if a red circle is next to a white triangle, the next row will spawn a black square. The computer can apply all permutations of shapes and colors next to different shapes and colors. This is one result.

You see a pattern? There are rules generating this work. First row is randomized shapes, but the subsequent rows are created through the application of rules depending upon what shape and color lies to either side. this process is known as a Wolfram cellular automata.
