A constellation is a group of stars that appear to be close together but are actually very distant from each other. Many ancient civilizations drew imaginary lines between these stars and created virtual silhouettes in the sky. And with them great mythological stories. Cassiopeia is the mother of Andromeda and wife of Cepheus, king of Ethiopia. Cassiopeia was so proud of her beauty that, to rival the Nereids, they asked Poseidon, god of the seas, for revenge and he in response sent the sea monster (Cetus) to the shores of the country causing great evil. To face this situation, Cepheus consulted the oracle of Amun, who advised sacrificing his daughter Andromeda exposing her tied to a rock on the cliff to be a victim of the monster. ...

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus, 2400 light years away from Earth. Amateur picture taken with professional CCD camera and refractor telescope (800mm, f/6.95), image taken consists of: Ha: 40 x 900s, OIII: 38 x 900s, SII: 38 x 900s. The Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC 1396) is hydrogen emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus. It is called the Elephant's Trunk nebula because of its appearance at visible wavelenghts. It consists mostly of hydrogen gas, glowing red. This deep sky object is located approx 2400 light years away from Earth. Picture taken with newtonian telescope (750mm focal length), astronomy monochrome camera, RGB and H-alpha narrowband filters. Total exposure time: 4 hours.
