The clock tower and spire of St Cuthbert's church just off Lothian Road, Edinburgh, with edinburgh castle in the background. Tradition has it that St. Cuthbert, the famed monk-bishop of Lindisfarne, stopped by the shores of the Nor' Loch (a lake now replaced with Princes Street Gardens) just below Edinburgh Castle and built a little hut there. There are many interesting views to paint in the pretty village, Fondón, in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almería, Andalucia, Spain. I liked the balance of the composition for this watercolour of a narrow lane leading down to the church. Also the red paving of the lane adds warmth and colour to the painting. The ruin of Carriden Old Church at Carriden, Bon’ess, Falkirk District, Scotland. Carriden Old Church was built in 1766 to replace the medieval church adjacent to Carriden House. It is T-shaped in plan and finished in simple Georgian style. An aedicule was attached to the north side of the building in 1771 to protect the monument to Sir William Maxwell of Carriden. A tower with a spire and a session house were added around 1840. When the new church was opened in 1909 the roof was taken off the old one and it is now a picturesque ruin. St Michael and All Angels’ church is a Grade 2 Listed Building. It is situated immediately adjacent to Croft Castle, (near Leominster, Herefordshire, England) and is managed by the National Trust. The image was shot from the southern end of the beach just next to the disused open air swimming pool looking towards Cullercoats.

St Tysilio's Church, Sellack Sellack is a small village in the Wye Valley, not far from Ross-on-Wye (Herefordshire, England). The village consists of a handful of houses and the only church in England to be dedicated to the Celtic Saint Tysilio, though there are other places of worship that bear his name in Brittany and Wales, perhaps most notably that in the Anglesey village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in North Wales. Records indicate that Sellack's first priest was John de Henle in 1291, but the church is probably older still, and may originate from St Tysolio's lifetime in the 7th century A.D. A recent survey has confirmed the height of the stonework as 287 feet 6 inches (87.63 m) and the top of the cockerel weather vane as 293 feet 1 inch (89.33 m). It also confirms it as one of the very finest medieval steeples in the country.

Sitting, as it does, beside the River Nene in the Northamptonshire village of Fotheringhay makes the splendid church of St Mary and All Saints look even more stunning. It's renowned for containing a mausoleum to leading members of the Yorkist dynasty of the Wars of the Roses. The church was constructed in the 15th century. Fotheringhay village is also famous for being the place where Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned and, eventually, beheaded.
