Community Of The Holy Cross Tapestries

The Community of the Holy Cross was founded in 1857 by Elizabeth Neale, sister of John Mason Neale, the hymnographer, at the invitation of Father Charles Fuge Lowder. The foundation was for mission work in Father Lowder’s parish of London Docks, and mission work continued in a number of small houses up to the 1930’s. (From https://holycrosschc.org.uk/)

The Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem is believed to be the actual path Jesus walked to Calvary. Through the stations the Christian faithful make a spiritual pilgrimage through meditations on the Passion of Christ.

By the Holy Spirit Christians are united [1 Corinthians 12:12-13]. This Holy Spirit lives on the inside of us [1 Corinthians 3:16], growing in magnitude as our virtues of consciousness strengthen [Philippians 4:8; Psalms 21:3], such as Unconditional Love [John 4:16]. This light [John 1:5] becomes the Light of the World [Matthew 5:14-16]: the Holy Spirit of Christ [John 8:12]. The Body of Christ is the Church [Romans 12:4-5], the Cross our symbol, and its light the power of our maturity [Ephesians 2:19-22]. As a vessel for this light, live, move and have your being with God [Acts 17:28; John 13-17].

On the arms of the cross are the initial letters of the rhythmic Latin prayer: The Holy Cross My Light, Sin Never my Guide. (Crux sacra sit mihi lux! Nunquam draco sit mihi dux!) In the angles of the cross, the letters C S P B stand for Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (The cross of our holy father Benedict). Above the cross is the word pax (peace), the Benedictine motto. Around the margin of the back of the medal, the letters V R S N S M V - S M Q L I V B are the initial letters, of a Latin prayer: Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas! (Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!)

In the high Country we have one mountain that we call, Holy Cross. Cut into it's side are channels, that when seen during the right time of the year, boast a mountain-sized cross that is a sight that will fill your soul with awe.

Not only to paint such a very old building, but to depict it in the snow!!!! I did this at the request of my brother. It is the old Norman Church in the village where I lived as a child in the U.K. Built in 1180, it is a really beautiful building, as many of the British churches are. Nothing that old in Australia!!!! My brother recalled how he and I used to lie in our beds on Christmas Eve listening to the bells ringing and trying to go to sleep so that Santa would come!
