Jacques-Yves Cousteau, AC was a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author. He co-invented the first successful open-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, called the Aqua-Lung, which assisted him in producing some of the first underwater documentaries.

In 1963 - six aquanauts lived 10 metres down in the Red Sea, at Sha’ab Rumi off Sudan - in a sea-urchin shaped house (or habitat) for 30 days. The undersea colony was supported with air, water, food, power, and all other essentials of life, from a large support team above. Conshelf Two is documented in Jacques Cousteau's 1964 documentary film "World Without Sun".

Selecting shots for sequence, takes time, sometimes dedicated days are allocated to critters and specific species - awaiting for your turn to film and capture footage - means mid water stops are necessary - both for stills and moving footage. Here Fabien Cousteau (stills) and Matthew Ferraro (film) create a Mission 31 special...

In the times of Jacques Yves Cousteau during the era of Pre-continent II (Conshelf II) it was probably a thought that crossed many of the undersea working divers whilst submerged at depth... So as not to confuse, not too far from the undersea habitat, they built a tool shed which housed the items that they needed for underwater work... Whilst at such a nostalgic place of underwater exploration, as I took this shot, this entered my head... that the chap coming out of the empty tool station, would be 'quite dismayed to not find the itinerary of tools required' - to do the job...!
