When blood clots, red blood cells (erythrocytes) are trapped within a fibrin protein mesh, which is formed in response to chemicals secreted by the platelets. Stem cells, illustration. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can produce other types of cell when they divide. There are three main stem cell types in mammals: embryonic stem cells, derived from blastocysts; adult stem cells, which are found in adult tissues; and cord blood stem cells, which are found in the umbilical cord.

HeLa cells. Light micrograph of HeLa cells stained with Coomassie blue. HeLa cells are a continuously cultured cell line of human cervical cancer cells. They are immortal and so thrive in the laboratory. HeLa cells are widely used in biological and medical research.

Fibroblast cells. Immunofluorescence light micrograph of fibroblast cells. The cell nuclei are purple, actin filaments are cyan and microtubules, protein filaments that make up part of the cytoskeleton, are yellow. Fibroblasts are cells that give rise to connective tissue such as collagen, the main structural protein in the body. They are important in wound healing. Brain cells. Fluorescence light micrograph of a section through brain tissue, showing numerous glial cells and neurons (nerve cells). Glial cells, or neuroglia, are non-neural cells of the central nervous system (CNS, brain and spinal cord). They are the predominant cell type in brain tissue and are thought to outnumber neurons by 10 to 1. Their precise roles remain to be well understood. Glial cells provide physical and functional support to neurons and participate in maintenance of the blood-brain barrier by attachments to blood vessels (as seen here).

Cell division. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of a human epithelial cell (centre) during the late anaphase stage of mitosis. Mitosis is the cycle of replication and division by which new body cells are formed. Here the chromosomes (blue) of the parent cell have duplicated and the pairs are being pulled apart by microtubules (spindles, green) to opposite poles of the cell, in a process called cytokinesis. When the cell has split, two identical daughter cells are formed.

Stem cell-derived nerve cells. Fluorescence light micrograph of neural (nerve) stem cells that have been derived from human embryonic stem cells (HESC). Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is blue. HESC are pluripotent - they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 cell types in the human body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals received by the immature cells. This ability makes them a potential source of cells to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes.

Mitochondrion, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Mitochondria are a type of organelle found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. They oxidise sugars and fats to produce energy in a process called respiration. A mitochondrion has two membranes, a smooth outer membrane and a folded inner membrane. The folds of the inner membrane are called cristae, and it is here that the chemical reactions to produce energy take place. Magnification: x62,800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.

At above centre is the nucleus (large oval) containing genetic material in the form of DNA. Surrounding the nucleus is cell cytoplasm filled with endoplasmic reticulum. The endo- plasmic reticulum (ER) is a complex system of membranes which form a network of flattened cisternae (cavities). These function as reservoirs and channels for the storage and transport of substances through the cytoplasm. Here, the ER is coated in tiny particles known as ribosomes, responsible for the synthesis of cell proteins. Magnification: x10,000 at 6x4.5cm size.

T lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that recognise a specific site (antigen) on the surface of cancer cells or pathogens and bind to it. Some T lymphocytes then signal for other immune system cells to eliminate the cell.
