Of the 40 or so Dark-Eyed Juncos who visit the backyard in the fall and winter, there is the odd nonconformist -- in this case, a Cassiar Dark-Eyed Junco -- an intergrade Slate-Colored X Oregon. Slate-Coloreds are common in the east and the Oregons are the "de factos" Juncos out west -- so this hybrid (perched on the pear tree, keeping warm on our first snowy winter day!) was probably the result of a mating between both species where their breeding ranges overlapped. Photographed in South Delta, British Columbia, Canada during the Polar Vortex of 2016.

It has been a very cold winter in northern Oklahoma and much of the USA this year. This Dark-eyed Junco is a nice addition of colors to the white snow covered branches. I'm thankful for the Redbubble community for helping me identify this bird is a Dark Eyed Junco. At least that is what I think I learned. If I'm wrong could someone help ID!

There are several reasons birds fluff their feathers but in the very cold weather it is a way to help stay warm. Fluffing their feathers allows them to trap warm air from body heat; the more trapped air, the warmer the bird. This Dark-eyed Junco extremely fluffy so I imagine it is quite warm.
