It borders Hertfordshire and occupies a large area of land on the left bank of the upper Stort Valley. Old Harlow is a village founded in the early medieval period, mostly comprising Victorian buildings along it’s high street. The new town was built after World War ll to ease overcrowding in London due to the devastation caused by The Blitz. On the western side of Thirlmere in England's Cumbrian Lake District is a narrow winding road along the length of the lake. Several parking places give access to woodland walks to the shore of the lake. This bridge is on one such walk near the southern end of the lake, crossing a small but torrential stream tumbling down the hillside. It's the sort of bridge that invites you to cross it - just to see where it leads!

The rather elegant footbridge connects Christchurch Meadow Walk and Boathouse Island on the River Thames near Oxford. Passing under the bridge you would eventually meet with the River Cherwell which joins the Thames a little further downstream. To the right of the bridge are the University boathouses where the racing boats are stored. This image was captured from the Thames path on its way from Folly Bridge Oxford to Iffley.

An elegant footbridge over the River Kennet next to Greenham Lock near Newbury, Berkshire. The bridge forms the entrance to a boatyard and dry dock. This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the section between Reading and Newbury was opened The remainder of the Kennet and Avon to join Bristol and Reading was built between 1794 and 1810. The new foot and cycle bridge over the River Thames at Reading in Berkshire, England, just upstream from the busy road crossing at Reading Bridge. The footbridge, named Christchurch Bridge as the result of a poll, links Caversham to the north with Reading and in particular the station on the south bank. The name reflects historic links with Christchurch Cathedral in Oxford. The bridge was opened in 2017 by the Mayor of Reading with an inaugural game of poohsticks! Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A wooden footbridge taking pedestrians and cyclists over the River Kennet in Newbury, Berkshire. Here an arm of the river has left the main stream - the Kennet and Avon Navigation - and after passing through a sluice gate rushes along just below the main waterway with further weirs adding to it. The river, through the sluices effectively controls the level of water in the canal. This section of the waterway was created between 1718-24 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A footbridge inviting us to cross over the River Pang at Tidmarsh, West Berkshire. Once over we can pass through the gate into the meadows and walk to Sulham. To our right is historic Tidmarsh Mill, once home to Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington. To the left the river flows on to meet the Thames at Pangbourne. The Pang, one of England's ecologically valued chalk streams, starts its life on the Berkshire Downs near Compton (depending on rainfall!) and supports a wide variety of wildlife.

As a way of encouraging children to enjoy the paintings of the great masters, Claude Monet’s painting of the Japanese Footbridge in his garden has been paid a visit by none other than Christopher Robin and Winnie-The-Pooh.

This picturesque footbridge crosses an arm of the Thames as it passes by the village of Little Wittenham in Oxfordshire. This is found just below Days Lock and here it is seen from the Thames Path National Trail. Until quite recently this bridge was the scene of the annual Pooh Sticks Championships - competitors dropping their sticks from the upstream side and watching them race under the bridge with the current. The bridge leads to the village church and the Wittenham Clumps - two tree crowned hills and prehistoric settlement -an Oxforshire landmark.

This elegant footbridge, No. 83, crosses over the Kennet and Avon Canal is at Hungerford in Berkshire, England. It's found to the east and just downstream of the town's wharf and road bridge, In the early to mid 19th century the canal was once busy with commercial traffic transporting goods such as Bath stone for the grand buildings then springing up in the area. The canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to provide a link between Bristol and London avoiding the rough roads.
