Istanbul, Turkey. This is the view of the new city, taken from the other side of the Bosphorus River, in the old city. We spent a few days in Istanbul, visiting sites and taking in the rich culture that Turkey is so well known for. This scene stood out to me, among the more modern buildings of the new city stood this tower, like something straight out of a Disney cartoon. Galata Tower was constructed in 1348 as part of the Geones empire. It was used as a vantage point for spotting enemy fleets of ships, fires in the outer reaches of the land and as a weapons store. Minarets are everywhere in Istanbul, Turkey. I believe the minarets and dome belong to the Nusretiye Mosque in the Tophane district of Beyoğlu. While its architecture is influenced by Islamic elements, it retains a Baroque style, making it unique to the city. It was built in 1823-1826 by Sultan Mahmut II.
