Gloucester Docks Number of views as of 18th June 2017 = 300. Founded in AD 97 by the Romans, the city of Gloucester (Gloucestershire, England) has long been an important commercial centre and port. Linked to the Severn estuary by the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, the port was strategically important due to its proximity to Birmingham, less than 50 miles away to the north. The many warehouses lining the quayside (including Biddle and Shipton shown here) date from the port's heyday in the 19th century. They were mainly built for the storage and processing of imported wheat, barley, oats, maize, linseed and cotton seed. Most have now been restored and converted for office and residential use. The frigate Gloucester is a Speaker-class third rate, commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Gloucester after the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660. The ship was ordered in December 1652, built at Limehouse in East London, and launched in 1654. The warship was conveying James Stuart, Duke of York to Scotland, when on 6 May 1682 she struck a sandbank off the Norfolk coast, and quickly sank. The announcement of the finding of Gloucester was made in 2022, having had to wait until after the ship's identity was confirmed, but also to protect the site, which is located in international waters.

Established in 1623, Gloucester, Massachusetts is America's oldest seaport, so it would make sense that it's also home to some of America's oldest public houses. The city's very roots are tied to the sea, so it should come as no surprise that most of the taverns carry a nautical theme of some sort. One such example is Voyagers Tavern, a watering hole that has been serving up drinks to salty sea dogs since 1889 right off the Inner Harbor.
