Horizontal Landscape Tapestries

I often pass this barn as I travel to our cottage. It always catches my eye, sitting as it does so tidily and alone in a field. The barn appears to be in great condition, unlike so many of its vintage. Offset from the barn are a terrific quartet of conifers, which provide balance to the image, Judging by the spacing between them, there was probably a fifth in there at one time. I'm guessing, but there was probably a farm house there at as well. The morning light provides a golden glow to the old barn boards and the fresh snow gives the whole image a sparkle. I hope you like it.

On a trip to Prince Edward County in Ontario, I realised that it is host to some remarkable farm structures. Doted throughout the county are these vestiges of a long tradition of farming. Some where in a sad state of repair having been neglected or abandoned, but others were still in active use. I loved this one for its setting, surrounded by neatly mowed grass. The round bales of straw in the doorway spoke to its continued use. And then there's the magnificent blue of the sky; the whole scene seems idyllic.

It was late afternoon when we got to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. We were almost the last to gain entrance that day, but it meant that we pretty much had the place to ourselves. We hired a guide to swiftly show us around before they closed the gates, who, recognising my love of photography, took us to the best spots. This image is of the Moonlight Pavilion (Preah Tineang Chan Chhaya), which is used for traditional dance ceremonies and banquets. What I love about this image is the remarkable architectural whimsy in the roof of the pavilion. The multi-tiered roof, the spire, the ornate and colourful roofing, and the wispy upturned pieces at the end of the roof gables, which we were told were there to represent snakes. Some where in a sad state of repair having been neglected or abandoned, but others were still in active use. I loved this one for the tidiness of the barn in its setting surrounded by neatly mowed grass, which in turn spoke to its continued use. And then there's the magnificent blue of the sky; the whole scene seems idyllic.

One of the things to do when visiting Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is to visit the French-colonial central post office. Built in the late 1800s, it is a truly wonderful building. This image shows the upper reaches of the main business hall, with its arched roof and skylights supported by slender pillars, all painted in shades of green, yellow and orange. At the far end is a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, an ever-present force in Vietnam's mid-twentieth past. I love this image for its portrayal of the symmetry of structure and the wonderful colour scheme.

Like many cathedrals, St Albans Cathedral is the product of many generations of work. The present structure is mainly Norman in origin, but there are older Saxon elements and later Gothic construction. Included in the construction are Roman stone blocks, which were taken from the Roman fort that at one time existed just down the hill from the cathedral. Added to this are the many repairs over the centuries, so the cathedral exhibits many architectural styles. You can see in the image, for example, how the construction of the buttresses changes halfway along the nave. That said, I love the image because it rightly reflects how imposing the structure is.

It was a late winter day as I overlooked Lake Huron from the cliff at Pioneer Park, in Bayfield, Ontario. The Sun was shining, but there was snow forecast for later in the day. The ice, pushed ashore by the wind, stretched as far as the eye could see. The accumulation of ice on the ends of piers was piled high, the result of early winter storms when the spray would freeze and remain through the winter. But, spring would soon be here and the lake would again be transformed into its more obviously watery self.

Alas, some where in a sad state of repair having been neglected or abandoned, but others were still in active use. I loved this one for the tidiness of the barn with mowed grass all around, which in turn spoke to its continued use. And then there's the all those primary colours, the red of the roof, the green grass, and the magnificent blue of the sky above. It all seemed so rustic.

If visiting the Nymphemburg Palace, just on the outskirts of Munich, you'll notice a series of lodges, arranged in a semicircle, that face the front of the palace. In this image, the buildings seem almost like scale models, so I gave the sky prominence. The colours are overwhelmingly primary.

I captured this image while visiting the Gullfoss waterfall. The water that feeds the waterfall comes from the glacier in this image, which is a relatively short distance, about 15 kilometres, from the waterfall. when capturing the image, I was really struck by the incredibly blue sky over the brilliantly white glacier, the stark contrast of the black volcanic on which the glacier resides, and the yellows and greens of the vegetation in the foreground.

It was a late winter day when the snow squall started. I had been up to our cottage but the weather turned on my return journey. While it was early afternoon, so the day was bright, the snow had transformed the sky and land into a white, opaque scene, with little detail in the distance. The gravel road was almost completely snow-covered, but the skeletal trees stood out from the white wilderness.

So what is this? These are the 'sails' that adorn Vancouver's Canada Place, which is the cruise ship docking terminal and a generally wonderful place to explore. The structures on its roof are lookalikes for the sails of a sailing boat, ship, dingy, etc. They are an expression of of the ocean that lies on Vancouver's doorstep. In this image, I love the deepness of the dark blue sky in contrast with the almost perfect whiteness of the sails. I hope you do too!

This image is of some lily pads and sundry other water plant growing in a pond. Where was a pond that contained such a multitude of plant life; well at Angkor Wat?

If you go to Iceland, one of the most popular things to do is to drive the Golden Circle; a trip that takes you to Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss. This image is of some hills as you travel between Thingvellir and Geysir, near the village of Laugarvatn. I really liked the simple layering in this image: the sky, the dark hillside, and the golden foreground.

This image is of a barn I often drive past at around sunset. The barn is on Airport Road in Huron County, Ontario. I suppose that a farmhouse stood by the barn at some point, but today it sits alone in a field, surrounded by the crop for that year. Unlike so many barns of its era, this one is excellent condition and is surely a matter of pride to the farmer that owns it. What I love about this image is the simplicity: the late afternoon radiance in the sky, the golden glow off the crops, the small grouping of trees, and, of course, the barn that looks so settled into its surrounding landscape.

This is an image of an ornamental pond with the very stately Waddesdon Manor beyond. When capturing the image, I was drawn by the view across the pond to the manor house beyond, and the charm of the gardens that surround it.. The manor was built in the late 1800s for the Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, but is now owned the National Trust in the UK although still managed by the Rothschild family.

This is an image of some lily pads floating in a pond on the Biltmore Estate, near Asheville in North Carolina. I loved the arrangement of the lily pads but found the underwater detail distracting. To counter this, I've taken some artistic licence by isolating that part of the image and darkening it to a point where it is essentially black. This has given the lily pads and flower the surreal quality of floating, as if in space.

This image is of the upper reaches of Gullfoss, an amazing waterfall in southern Iceland. Here the water is rushing downhill just prior to it tumbling over a deep drop into the gorge. Overall the drop is about 100 feet. The water comes from a glacier that's not far from the falls. This glacial water has a golden hue to it, which gives rise to the name of the waterfall, 'gull' meaning gold. Powerful waterfalls are captivating with their sense of power and the roar of the water. What I love about this image is the way the Sun on the spray from the turbulent water has caused a rainbow to form, the deep blue sky, and the power expressed by the rushing water.

Overlooking Lake Ontario, this is the old lighthouse at Traverse Point in Prince Edward County, Ontario. These days the lighthouse is retired, but it still commands a wonderful view across the lake. It's old, having been built in 1881, and clearly has its architectural roots in the style of Canadian lighthouses. However, it no longer has the red-painted trim that identifies the lighthouses on Canada's shores, and the light has gone, but it still looks so right.

While attending a wedding, I ventured outside to view the sunset. I was rewarded with this amazing scene. The air had become completely calm, which allowed for the almost prefect reflections off the water. The golden tones gave a wonderful sense of warmth. All was good.

Close to my home is an oxbow formation, known as the Coves, that shows the course of the local river before the river changed course. That change of course is quite recent, certainly within the time that the area has been settled. Today, the old river course is a haven for flora and fauna within the city limits. This image, captured on a warm August day, shows the stream that still exists and the wetlands that surround it. Everything is abundantly alive and so lovely to walk through.

While walking along the beach at Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, I couldn't help but note the patterns in the sand caused by the gentle to and fro of the waves. The sand there has a fairly coarse texture, I think it's the ground remains of sea shells, which easily flows with the passing of each wave. Looking at the sand, you could see a criss-crossing of etchings, lozenge like, made by tiny rivulets in the sand. With each wave, the pattern was renewed. What I love about this image is the textures in the sand, the oblique line of froth, and the gentle flow of water behind.

On a visit to Vancouver, we rented bikes and rode to Granville Island, amongst other places. The island is very artsy with lots of interesting shops. But it's also very popular with the seagulls, so here's one that ventured quite close. What I love about this image is the quality of the light, the seagull is sharply defined by the bright sunlight, and the stark contrast of the dark water of False Creek that provides an almost black background.

When in Copenhagen, we took a boat ride around the canals and harbour. Part of the boat ride took us past two identical naval vessels, frigates, I think, As the boat passed in front of the two ships, I waited for the right moment to get this perfectly symmetrical shot.

I do like to walk among trees. This an image of just one such occasion, when we went for a walk in the Naftel's Conservation Area, near Goderich, Ontario. It's close to where we have our cottage, a place where we can spend an hour roaming among the very varied treescapes. I love this image for the way the trees converge. It's interesting the way this species of tree abandons its lower branches in its race for the sky. On the ground is a carpet of fallen needles that have turned a deep reddy-brown.

As seen on Water Street in Vancouver's Gastown District. I don't often take images of shop windows, but this seemed so much fun, so I thought, "Why not?".
