James Webb Space Telescope Deep Field - Webb Space Telescope is the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date

The enormous mosaic of Stephan’s Quintet is the largest image so far from James Webb Space Telescope, covering about one-fifth of the Moon’s diameter. With its powerful, infrared vision and very high spatial resolution, the Webb telescope shows details never seen before of this galaxy group. Shimmering clusters of millions of young stars and areas of fresh stars feature in this image.

Thousands of galaxies flood this near-infrared image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. High-resolution imaging from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope combined with a natural effect known as gravitational lensing made this finely detailed image possible.

An image of the Cartwheel Galaxy and its companion galaxies is a composite taken from the James Webb’s Near-Infrared and Mid-Infrared Instrument on the powerful telescope. This cartwheel galaxy formed as the result of a high-speed collision that occurred about 400 million years ago. The Cartwheel is composed of two rings, a bright inner ring and a colorful outer ring. Both rings expand outward from the center of the collision like shock waves.

First deep field image released from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This full-colour infrared image shows galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, which lies 4.6 billion light years from Earth. It is the deepest, most detailed infrared image taken to date (July 2022). The galaxy cluster acts as a gravitational lens, allowing even more distant galaxies (red arcs) to be seen. The light from these galaxies has been travelling for over 13 billion years. The JWST was launched in December 2021. Composite image obtained by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). James Webb Space Telescope First Ever Color Image SMACS 0723 hexagonal shaped cut

This image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 is overflowing with detail. Thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared – have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time. This slice of the vast universe is approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground.
