Sunset Starling Murmuration

As if the Sandhill Cranes were not loud enough, from the field beyond the bay arose a very loud Murmuration of Starlings. European Starlings use murmuration to confuse predators and to keep warm. And it could have been either one on this morning as it was 24 degrees when we arrived and while watching mainly the Sandhill Cranes we witnessed about 10 Bald Eagles flying over the water and the grassy areas. The starling murmuration over Brighton Pier was certainly an incredible sight! One of natures great spectacles.

The starlings almost obliterate the end of Brighton Pier for a moment this evening. What a wonderful sight it was!

Brighton at sunset and the starlings gather in huge numbers. 'Smaller than blackbirds, with a short tail, pointed head, triangular wings, starlings look black at a distance but when seen closer they are very glossy with a sheen of purples and greens. Their flight is fast and direct and they walk and run confidently on the ground. Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds, its decline elsewhere makes it a Red List species.' RSPB website

It is thought that the Starling was brought to the United States because it was named in a work by Shakespeare.
