At last the dogs of war have a P47, the Jug as it was know to its pilots was named not for its size, as in juggernaut, but for the fact that someone at some point thought that if up ended and balanced on its nose its fuselage looked like a classic American milk jug. In any case it was a massive fighter plane known for being fast and very rugged. It had 8 50,cal machine guns in the wings and packed a huge bunch. Pilots of the P47 found it was excellent in a dive but not so great in a dogfight against more agile fighters like the Bf109. Therefore they perfected the Boom and Zoom. Dive on the enemy guns blazing and then use the momentum to fly back up to altitude whether a kill was made or not. If a pilot wanted to live a long hand happy life

P47 Thunderbolt from Second World War vintage (Dallas Blonde) which was flown by Lt Don Kearns destroyed 3 enemy planes in the Italian Theatre in 1944.

The P-47, based on the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, was to be very effective as a short-to-medium range escort fighter plane in high-altitude air-to-air combat and, when unleashed as a fighter-bomber, proved especially adept at ground attack in both the World War II European and Pacific Theaters.

Activated on 9 February 1942. Moved to Egypt, October–November 1942, and became part of Ninth Air Force. Trained with Curtiss P-40 Warhawks's while moving westward in the wake of the British drive across Egypt and Libya to Tunisia. Although many of the unit's pilots flew combat missions with other organizations, the 79th group itself did not begin operations until March 1943. By escorting bombers, attacking enemy shipping, and supporting ground forces, took part in the Allied operations that defeated Axis forces in North Africa, captured Pantelleria, and conquered Sicily.
