It began life as a fishing port in 1788, apparently based on designs by the noted engineer Thomas Telford. The quayside is busy with fishing and leisure boats and is also home to the Tobermory Distillery.

The fishing port of Almeria. I like the soft, early morning light for this subject. I can capture the reflections of the boats in the calm water before the breeze gets up. Although not as sharply defined as in the afternoon light the Moorish castle Alcazaba and the church of San Roque make a great backdrop. Sullivan Bay, Sorrento, Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. Sullivan Bay lies 60 km due south of Melbourne on Port Phillip bay, one kilometre east of Sorrento, Victoria. It is a sheltered bay and is home to several private jetty's. It was established as a short-lived convict settlement in 1803 by Lieutenant-Colonel David Collins, who named the bay after the Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, John Sullivan.

Couch's Kingbird - Dragonfly for Lunch by Debra Martz We heard this kingbird calling as it flew through the treetops around noon at Estero LLano Grande State Park. Finally it landed up high, looked around for awhile, then swooped down and caught this dragonfly. This huge dragonfly!! It worked on it for a while, tossing and tapping on the limb in an effort to try and remove the wings. But in the end, ate the dragonfly, wings and all!!

The Citadel in the harbour at Essaouira on the Moroccan coast. This fortification was created in the French style under the orders of Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdullah in the C18th. He established Essaouira as his capital using European architects to employ the latest techniques and give it a 'modern' look (for the 1700s!). TS (Training ship) Royalist as she was berthed on a bright April morning on the quayside of the River Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. The TS Royalist is the UK Sea Cadets flagship and was built as recently as 2015 in Spain

Sailing out of Portsmouth Harbour and passing the Royal Naval Dockyard where a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker is moored. Portsmouth has been an important harbour for years - an ideal place for warships from Medieval times. The first Royal Navy was formed by Henry VIII although the first properly organised RN was started by Charles II in the late 1600s when he inherited a large fleet! However, Portsmouth is also an important Merchant Navy port and ferry terminal with many cruises starting here.

Moving North of Boulmer, past the beautiful coves around Sugar Sands we reach the Northumberland fishing port of Craster, which is most famous for it's kippers (cured herring) and as the access point to Dunstanburgh Castle. The Village, about 7 miles North-East of Alnwick, has a lot to offer with it's attractive harbour and good amenities.
