Here the waterway reaches its northern limit after winding through the Brecon Beacons, The canal was constructed to link Brecon with the docks at Newport, the narrow boats carrying coal, iron and limestone. A system of tramways linked the canal to the mines and quarries. It is currently navigable between Brecon and Pontymoile, with plans in place to extend this to Newport.

A Baldwin locomotive built in Philadelphia in 1930. This 4-6-2 tender loco weighing 47 tons was destined for South Africa where it worked hauling limestone for the Eastern Province Cement Co at Port Elizabeth. In the early 1990s it was purchased by the Brecon Mountain Railway and was restored between 1993 and 1997. It now hauls passengers on the scenic line from Pant near Merthyr Tydfil to Torpantau in the Brecon Beacons.

The valve tower next to the dam at the Pontsticill Reservoir in Powis, South Wales. Also known as the Taf Fechan Reservoir it is situated on the south side of the Brecon Beacons National Park and is within the Fforest Fawr Geopark. This gothic - styled valve house sits next to the dam and is adjacent to the bell-mouthed spillway. The lake is 2.5 miles long and covers 102 hectares - approximately 252 acres. The castle at Brecon (Aberhonddu) standing above the River Honddu close to where it flows into the River Usk. This was one of the first stone castles in Wales, built by Bernard de Neufmarche in 1093. The Welsh, however, destroyed the town in the 1100s and so a stone shell keep and outer walls were built by the early 1200s. The section in the image dates from c.1300. In 1645 Parliament captured the castle and slighted (razed) the walls to prevent future defensive use. A digital pencil drawing.

Looking across the River Usk as it flows through the market town of Brecon (Aberhonddu) in Powys, Wales, to the town's medieval castle. Bridge 166 crossing the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal as it leaves the basin in Brecon, South Wales. Dating from the early 1800s the canal was constructed to transport coal and iron to Newport. It also joined with a system of tramways linking mines and quarries to the waterway. It winds its way through the Brecon Beacons, largely following the contours of the mountains as it tracks the course of the River Usk. It is currently navigable to Pontnewydd and plans are in place to extend this.

Walking along the towpath east out of Talybont village by the Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canal in Powys, South Wales. Following the contours of the Brecon Beacons, the canal was designed for the transportation of coal and iron to Newport. For this to reach the boats from the mines, a system of tramways was constructed. The canal is once again open for leisure traffic as far as Pontnewydd and plans are in place to restore the remaining stretches near Newport.
