Rocky Mount Tapestries

Rocky Mountain High is a 1972 folk song about the serenity found in the Rocky Mountains. The song was controversial when the FCC was permitted by a legal ruling to censor music deemed to promote drug abuse. Numerous radio stations cautiously banned it until the son'g author explained that the "high" was an innocent description of the sense of peace he found in the Rockies. Of course, that doesn't stop recreational drug users still maintaining an association with the song, one that was only reinforced when Colorado legalized marijuana in 2012. Regardless of what your high is, you can't beat experiencing the Rockies from Colorado, home to Rocky Mountain National Park as well as the range's highest peak, Mount Elbert, at 14,440 ft.

Golden hour in any part of the world makes everything look just that little bit more beautiful. Golden hour in the mountains is spectacular and seems to make for completely different scenes every few minutes as the light catches different parts of the mountains. This is one such scene, with the craggy slopes of Mount Rundle, covered with a recent snowfall, lighting up in pure gold.

The Forbidden Forest, also known as the Dark Forest, was a forest that bordered the edges of the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A week before the Jasper SkyTram closed for the season and there was already plenty of snow at the top! What we anticipated to be a fairly short trip up turned into a full afternoon of walking around on the top of Mount Whistlers, enjoying the crunch of snow under our feet and the epic views all around us.

Some nights do their best to discourage photographers from going out. On this night in June, I headed out to teach a night sky workshop only to be greeted with thick clouds across the entire sky. So, instead of teaching Milky Way photography, I taught the participants about capturing ultra-long exposures of streaky clouds, and then later, about light painting. The hot springs at the end of the last Vermilion Lake steaming at sunrise on a -20ºC winter's day in Banff. I loved how the steam had coated the entire marsh nearby in frost!
