An Australian flag which has become the symbol of democracy. The five stars represent the Southern Cross, and the white cross joining the stars stands for unity in defiance. It was first flown at the Eureka Stockade Rebellion in 1854.

The Southern Cross (Crux) constellation. The four brightest stars seen here identify the familiar asterism of the Southern Cross. Alpha Crucis (lower bottom right), the brightest star in the constellation, is a double system formed by two stars with similar magnitudes (1.4 and 1.9) only 4.4 arcseconds apart. Crux is the smallest constellation in the sky covering only 68 square degrees. The Coal Sack Nebula (round, dark at lower centre left) is one of the main features in Crux. It is a relatively nearby (500 light years) dark nebula and is formed by a cloud of interstellar dust which absorbs the radiation emitted by the stars in this area.

The flag of Australia is a defaced Blue Ensign: a blue field with the Union Jack in the canton (upper hoist quarter), and a large white seven-pointed star known as the Commonwealth Star in the lower hoist quarter. The fly contains a representation of the Southern Cross constellation, made up of five white stars – one small five-pointed star and four, larger, seven-pointed stars.

Yacht rock (originally known as the West Coast sound or adult-oriented rock is a broad music style and aesthetic commonly associated with soft rock, one of the most commercially successful genres from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Drawing on sources such as smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, and disco, common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals, and a focus on light, catchy melodies. Its name, coined in 2005 by the makers of the online video series Yacht Rock, was derived from its association with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of boating.

At the Elvina Engraving Site in the Kuring-Gai Chase National Park, Sydney, is an engraving of the emu in the sky, a constellation recognised by many Aboriginal groups across Australia, that is formed of dark clouds in the Milky Way, rather than the stars as in most constellations. When the constellation is above the carving in the rock the local Aboriginal People knew it was time to collect emu eggs.
