Night in St Marks Square, Venice

Venice - St Mark's Square painting

Looking over the waters of the Venetian Lagoon to the Campanile (bell tower) in St Mark's Square, Venice. It is late afternoon and the skies are stormy, allowing the late sunlight to illuminate the tower. The Camapanile as we see it now is a reconstruction finished in 1912 as the original building, completed in 1514, collapsed in 1902. It's original purpose was as a watch tower and after the belfry was added, the bells regulated the life oif the city.
