The Small Tortoiseshell is among the most well-known butterflies in the UK. The striking and attractive patterning and its appearance at almost any time of the year in urban areas have made it a familiar species. It is one of the first butterflies to be seen in spring and in the autumn it often visits garden flowers in large numbers. This example was spotted basking in July sunshine near Blyth in Northumberland, North East England.

These pieces were put together using three different butterfly paintings. The original paintings were all done by watercolour. All it takes is a moderate attention to detail, a little bit of patience, and a willingness to reflect on your own feelings to create something as wonderful as this.
