The turkey vulture (Cathartes aura), also known in some North American regions as the turkey buzzard (or just buzzard), and in some areas of the Caribbean as the John crow or carrion crow, is the most widespread of the New World vultures. One of three species in the genus Cathartes of the family Cathartidae, the turkey vulture ranges from southern Canada to the southernmost tip of South America. It inhabits a variety of open and semi-open areas, including subtropical forests, shrublands, pastures, and deserts.

Turkey Vulture Chimney Topper by Debra Martz I was just getting ready to put my gear back in the truck when I saw a Turkey Vulture circling to the west of this old abandoned house. I thought, "maybe I can get a neat fly by if I wait just a few minutes more." Then I noticed its circling stopped and it headed directly for the house, the chimney in fact, for a landing! After getting a number of shots of it making its way to land on the chimney, I swapped cameras from wide angle to the one with a zoom mounted to get just the Vulture and Chimney. Posing Turkey Vulture by Debra Martz There is a sidewalk and stairs along each level of the spillway that I walk while bird watching. Rarely are there birds on the railings with the exception of the Turkey Vultures especially during fall migration. There were 4 here together but 3 flew immediately upon seeing me. This one, howeve, decided to just hold its own spot which allowed me a few closeup up photos.
