The spectacular Breadknife up close. This is the view from a walking track as I headed for the Grand High Tops at the Warrumbungle National Park in north western New South Wales, Australia. 2233 views as of Aug 25, 2015. This amazing volcanic rock looks spectacular close up with it's rugged patterns but I didn't manage to get a good shot at closer range .. if that's possible. Timor Rock is 730 m high & is a bluish trachyte mound. I opted for a longer range shot that takes in a more Aussie feel with the fence & the eucalyptus tree. The amazing structure known as The Breadknife in the Warrumbungle National Park in NSW, Australia. This is a constant uphill track from the parking areas to this spot. A great workout for the legs & the heart. This is a great example of a volcanic fissure, where millions of years of erosion have left behind the much harder volcanic rock which previously oozed into crevices in the side of a volcano. At this stage I had climbed so much up the hill/mountain that I was happy to stop & take some photos. This is Belougery Spire photographed with Canon 400D on the Grand High Tops walking track. It's one of the fantastic volcanic plugs in the Warrumbungle National Park. These plugs are created when the softer rock forming the volcano weathers away over millions of years leaving the harder solidified lava remaining. The Warrumbungle National Park is near Coonabarabran in the north west of NSW, Australia & features a great range of Australian wildlife. The stunning view of the Breadknife from a spot just below Grand High Tops in the Warrumbungle National Park near Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia. It was quite an effort to get to this spot, but we all agreed that it was well worth it. Seeing this was a WOW moment even though I'd seen it before in sunnier conditions. The Warrumbungles is the remnants of a large, heavily eroded shield volcano that was active from 18 to 15 million years ago. A huge shield-shaped volcano formed as volcanic explosions occurred over millions of years. The remaining complex, rocky formations are what is left after millions of years of erosion. Crater Bluff is in the foreground with Tonduron Spire in the background. Both structures are volcanic plugs formed after millions of years of erosion exposes the solidified vents of old volcanos. I have a similar shot from this spot in my gallery but this one shows how my photography has improved over the years (I hope). As I reached Grand High Tops, a wedge tailed eagle hovered over us, giving the place a sense of grandeur. 500 views as of May 4, 2012. I rarely have people in my nature shots but this image appealed to me for various reasons. Dominating the background here is Crater Bluff in the Warrumbungle National Park. I did this walk by myself but met a few couples at the highlight of the walk at Grand High Tops. The guy in the photo did the walk with his girlfriend & I remember him telling me about various people who had scaled the Breadknife & Belougery Spire with obvious admiration. The thought of people scaling these almost vertical rock structures made me a bit nauseous. I liked the contrast here of the rugged Aussie staring up at the rugged Aussie rock structure. This was a sight that took my breath away on the Grand High Tops walking track in the Warrumbungles National Park. It had started to rain & I took this in a bit of a hurry worrying about getting the camera wet. The sky was misty creating fuzziness & lack of detail. I hurried on to escape the rain rather than waiting for it to clear which would have been a better idea. It definitely had a Jurassic Park feel about it when I first saw it. This is part of the volcanic fissure which includes the famous Breadknife. The Warrumbungle National Park is in the northwest of New South Wales, Australia.
