Cairnpapple Hill is one of the most important prehistoric sites on mainland Scotland. Here you can see a 1949 reconstruction of a 4000 year old burial site and a 1990s communications tower, the very old and the very new. The archaeology on the main site here spans a remarkable period of some 4000 years of activity, from about 3500 BC through to c.500 AD, with its major features being a Neolithic henge and circle, followed by a series of three Bronze Age cairns with cist burials, and a Late Iron Age cemetery. Cairnpapple was used from about 3,000 BC to 1400 BC firstly as a ceremonial site then several centuries later as a burial site. 5000 years ago, or around 3000BC, our Neolithic ancestors built a henge here.

The Forth Rail Bridge here as a digitally produced stylised graphic drawing. This was produced from my original image captured just before passing under the bridge. This is the oldest of the three bridges which cross the Firth of Forth in the west of Scotland connecting Fife on the north bank and West Lothian in the south. It was voted Scotland's greatest man-made structure in 2016 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This iconic steel cantilever structure - a symbol of Scotland's engineering heritage - connects Fife on the north bank and West Lothian in the south - just west of Edinburgh. It was voted Scotland's greatest man-made structure in 2016 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction started in 1882 and the bridge was opened by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, in 1890.

The view looking North from the top of Cairnpapple Hill in West Lothian, Scotland. At 310m or just over 1000ft in height the hill offers one of the best viewpoints in central Scotland. In the centre of the shot on the southern banks of the River Forth is the town of Grangemouth (where joak of RB fame resides). Grangemouth would be a pleasant place to live except that the town is dominated by the extremely large Grangemouth Oil Refinery with its numerous gas flares and cooling towers visible across a wide area of the Scottish Lowlands (look on joak's page for examples). Cairnpapple Hill is situated in the Hilderston Hills within the western range of the Bathgate Hills in the parish of Torphichen, West Lothian, in south-east Scotland.

The Camps Viaduct (built 1820) in Almondell and Calderwood Country Park, West Lothian, Scotland. Closed about 1960, the Viaduct used to carry the line from the Shale Oil works at Pumpherston to the North British Railway at Camps. Linlithgow Cross - The focal point of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland, is the Cross, overlooked by the magnificent Town House, built in 1668-70 to replace the original Tolbooth, demolished on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Altered over the years, it now accommodates the Burgh Halls (including the Council Chamber of the former Linlithgow Town Council) and the local Visitor Awareness Centre. The Cross Well in front, itself a replica of a 1628 original, was created in 1807 by Robert Gray, a one-handed stonemason. Incidently, Linlithgow is the town where I was born. The Ross Doocot, in Learmonth Gardens, close to the Strawberry Bank area of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. Doocot is the Scots word for a building devoted to the domestication of pigeons. Built by the Barons Ross of Halkhead in the 16th century, to fattened pigeons as part of the winter diet, it is a circular beehive dovecot, containing 370 nesting boxes in its thick rubble walls, bound by three projecting rat-courses. Learmonth Gardens commemorate Alexander Learmonth, Provost of Linlithgow, 1802-1807. A Provost is the Scots equivalent of a Mayor. Shot taken 11th October 2008. The building with the twin turrets at the centre of the shot is the old Academy at the Low Port in Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. The Academy moved in December 1968 to a new building in the town. Built in 1900, and opened as a place of learning in 1902, the building is now used as the Low Port Primary School. The Kirk of Calder in Mid-Calder, West Lothian, Scotland is a beautiful village church which comes with a fascinating history and, over the years, a bewildering variety of names. Sometimes referred to as the Parish Kirk of Midcalder, it was until the Reformation known as St Cuthbert's. At various times since it has been known as Calder Kirk and, briefly, St John's to reflect local links with the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The name "Kirk of Calder" dates back to a merger of congregations in 1956 and has a neatness that suits the building well. St Cuthbert's Church was originally built on this site some time around 1150 and was among the properties granted to Dunfermline Abbey in the 1160s.

"St Michael is kinde to strangers". So runs the motto of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. St Michael is the patron saint of the town and, in the form of the ancient church of that name, he still stands guard above its inhabitants, both residents and strangers alike. Although it is undoubtedly of earlier origin the first mention of "the great church of Linlithgow" is in a charter of 1138 in which King David I gifted it "with all its chapels, lands and other rights" to the Cathedral of St Andrews. On 22nd May 1242, the Church of St Michael of Linlithgow was consecrated by David de Bernham, Bishop of St Andrews.
