Whitchurch Tapestries

The toll bridge at Whitchurch on Thames, spanning the river between Pangbourne in Berkshire and Whitchurch in Oxfordshire, England. There has been a bridge here since 1792, the present iron one, constructed in 1902 being the third. It is one of the few remaining toll bridges on the River Thames. From October 2013 until September 2014 the bridge was closed to traffic in order that it could be completely dismantled and refurbished. Nikon D7000

The church is the parish church of St Mary, originally medieval although it was extensively rebuilt in 1858 by the architect Henry Woodyer.

The church and mill buildings at Whitchurch on Thames viewed from the toll bridge. Whitchurch is in South Oxfordshire and lies on the north bank of the River Thames opposite the Berkshire village of Pangbourne. On a backwater next to the lock is the old mill, now converted into housing together with several old brick and tile cottages. The parish church of St Mary, largely rebuilt in 1857 is thought to be of Saxon origin.

There has been a toll bridge here since 1792, the original being wooden. The present iron bridge was constructed in 1902 and has recently been refurbished. This image was captured on a bright afternoon in early February when the Thames was high and flowing fast.
