Cottonwood Scarred Tree with a Hawk Topping by Debra Martz When I saw this fire scarred tree in the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in northern Oklahoma, I just had to stop to appreciate the beauty that remained. The fire came through the NWR several years ago burning much of the land and also the visitor/ranger station. This scarred tree stands proud and tall with only black and white bark. Morning with the Egrets Black and White by Debra Martz Egrets can often be found fishing from the manmade penisulas at the bottom of the spillway. There is one on the south and one on the north bank below the spillway which narrows the flow into the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River. Migrating Pelicans at Rest by Debra Martz Large numbers of American White Pelicans continued to arrive at the Great Salt Plains State Park. It is a stopping point along their route south to fill on fish. After working together herding fish they moved to the the edge of the spillway to rest and some did some preening. American White Pelican Early Morning Blues by Debra Martz I had been watching the Pelicans at the spillway for over 45 minutes with some fishing together and others alone like this one. The morning light plays an important part of the colors of the water. Only 18 minutes earlier the water was all solid gold during the golden hour; now only parts of the ripples are still reflecting that gold. An old house in the middle of Nebraska. Was driving for 2 days trying to find a shot like this.

It is April and it is breeding season. Most birds change colors in plumage during this season or get additional features. The American White Pelicans grow a plate on the top of their massive bills and the colors of the bill become much more vibrant. Cavalry (from the French cavalerie, cf. cheval 'horse') or horsemen are soldiers or warriors who fight mounted on horseback. Cavalry were historically the most mobile of the combat arms. Infantry who moved on horseback, but dismounted to fight on foot, were known in the 17th and early 18th centuries as dragoons, a class of mounted infantry which later evolved into cavalry proper while retaining their historic title. Cavalry had the advantage of improved mobility, and a man fighting.

Early Morning American White Pelicans in Black and White by Debra Martz I love fall migration in northern Oklahoma. The American White Pelicans, Cormorants, Seagulls of several varieties arrive in large numbers as a resting area for a few weeks as they fish the waters of the lake, river and at the spillway. Area Beyond This Sign Closed by Debra Martz A small portion of the 11,000 acreas of salt flats within the Salt Plains National Refuge is open to the public April 1 through October 15 each year. There is a designated area where digging for the Selenite Crystals is allowed. The rest of the area is preserved for wildlife and birds, more specifially for the fall and spring migration of birds included several endangered and at risk species. The Pelicans Found the Fish by Debra Martz I was taken by surprise when we pulled into the Sandy Beach campground and saw this large group of American White Pelicans fishing next to the dam. I thought all but the few resident pelicans had moved on south but on this January day there were many more than the normal count. This is just a small section of the line of pelicans that were fishing together. Unlike many birds that are territorial, these Pelicans work together herding fish into shallow waters where they dip their head under, scoop, then raise their heads and gulp down the catch. And Then The Cormorants Arrived ©Debra Martz For two weeks I had only been seeing a few Double-Crested Cormorants with the American White Pelicans, even at the previous areas where I stopped and just before moving to one more place on the lake. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least, when I saw these arriving in huge numbers. This is mostly Snow Geese with some Greater White-fronter Geese and Canada Geese with a few ducks in the mix as well.
