Winding Tapestries

The view from Aldermaston Lock downstream to Aldermaston Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire. Just below the lock is the winding hole - big enough to be able to turn a 72ft narrowboat, Beyond that is the lift bridge carrying the A340 from the A4 Bath Road to Basingstoke. The Wharf was once a hive of industry, busy with canal boats loading and unloading cargoes. Here were also the workshops necessary to maintain the waterway. An almost forgotten memorial to an almost forgotten industry. This memorial marks the site of Cambois Colliery in the old Northumberland Coal Field. The colliery has long since closed and the memorial is becoming overgrown and neglected; a sad outcome after the toil, sweat. tears and loss of life in this once proud industry.

Its maze of small streets and lanes are lined with both brick and half-timbered buildings. Several springs rise in the village feeding a small lake and in times past watercress was cultivated here.
