A couple of Heermann’s gulls on Zuma beach in Malibu California. The sun is setting behind them casting an orange coloured shaft of light across the water, waves and sand.

Malibu Point is another one of Southern California’s best waves…and even though it has been cheesed out again and again by Hollywood…it still manages to captivate most surfers (except maybe the guys that have to battle it in the Malibu line-up day in and day out just to catch a few waves outside of work). Even though it is a total fantasy, many surfers would probably pay an arm and a leg at the thought of getting a pumping, uncrowded, S swell at the ‘bu.

Malibu is a city west of Los Angeles, California. It’s known for its celebrity homes and beaches, including wide and sandy Zuma Beach. To the east is Malibu Lagoon State Beach, known as Surfrider Beach for its amazing waves. Nearby is the Spanish Revival–style Adamson House, with local history displays in its Malibu Lagoon Museum. Inland, trails weave through canyons, waterfalls and grasslands in the Santa Monica Mountains. Malibu Surfrider is a faithful reproduction of a thrifted iron-on design that made its way to use from all the way back in 1974 and is ready to live on again.

My continuing series of great places to surf on the west coast. Extremely crowded, absolutely no ettiquette. Be prepared to be dropped in on 10 million times. You can bring any board here... although the 1st point is the most forgiving of the breaks and I prefer to call it the "kiddie pool." The real breaks here are 3rd point and 2nd point. It's a faster take off, and can get sectiony. Best if you know how to pump your board. Here you might actually roll up with five dudes and techno. Not a secret spot, nor an intensely-regulated locals spot, but there are a variety of ways in which to take one for the team at Malibu.
