I love H. P. Lovecraft and Cthulhu mythos and have done a ton of illustrations relating to them. I had to start on here with Cthulhu, naturally. He looks up at us from the depths of R'lyeh, awakened from his dream.

A silhouette of my Cthulhu design on top of page 3 of "Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos" by H. P. Lovecraft. This is the early part of the story where the narrator first comes across a figure in clay that his "somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature.... A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings."

I was very pleased with the colouring of the Great Old One. I think I got the tone right. If you've not familiar with Cthulhu ("Ke-too-loo") or have not read any of the stories written by its creator H.P. Lovecraft, I highly recommend it. His writing style is one of a kind. Just get any of the collection set like this one. However, if you're not the reading type, perhaps this documentary will enlighten you. It features interviews from Neil Gaiman (The Sandman, Coraline), John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing), Guillermo del Torro (Hellboy, The Shape of Water) and many others. "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!"
