Goring Lock on the River Thames on a sunny October day. There has been a lock here since the 1500s when it was a flash lock, In the 1700s it was redesigned as a pound lock and was constructed of timber, The present lock dates from the 1920s. Goring-on-Thames is a picturesque village in Oxfordshire and is a haunt of artists (and photographers!). Here the river narrows to pass between the North Wessex Downs and the Chiltern Hills at the point known as the Goring Gap.

The River Thames as it flows through the villager of Cookham on its way to London and the sea. The Thames Path is a long-distance trail which follows the river all the way from Cricklade in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, London. Cookham, on the banks of the Thames is a village lying in the furthest north-east corner of Berkshire, England. Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and set many of his paintings. The view from the summit of the Kirkstone Pass in Cumbria looking down on Widermere shimmering in the distance. The Pass connects Ambleside in the Rothay Valley with Patterdale in the Ullswater Valley and has an altitude of 1489ft (or 454m). The weather had been rather changeable (this is the Lake District!) but now the sun was glinting through and reflecting on distant Windermere, the largest natural lake in England. Thirlmere which is 3.5 miles long and about 188 feet deep, was created in the late 1800s to supply water to ManchesterAlthough the main road from Ambleside to Keswick runs along the eastern shore, by far the best views are found by driving along the narrow road on its western side.

The interior of Holy Trinity Church at Bosham, West Sussex, looking along the length of the nave to the chancel. The church sits on the edge of the village near the quay, overlooking the water. Its Norman past can be seen in the round chancel arch but the building has its origins earlier than this being founded in c.850. This was replaced in the 10th century by Holy Trinity church and features in the Bayeaux Tapestry where Harold Godwinson and his followers are depicted riding to the building.

Just below the swing bridge carrying the road over the Kennet and Avon Canal at Sulhamstead in Berkshire, England. The surrounding buildings are reflected in the water and the whole scene is bathed in late afternoon sunlight. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. The canal, once almost derelict, was restored in the late 1900s, being fully opened in 1990.

Exeter Cathedral, properly known as Cathedral Church of St Peter in Exeter, is an Anglican Cathedral situated in the centre of Exeter, in Devon. The current building was completed circa 1400 but it's founding dates back to the 11th century.

The Skiddaw range of the Lake District's Northern Fells seen at sunset. This is the view from one of the country roads just east of Silloth on the Solway coast. Whatever the weather, spectacular sunsets always seem to appear, often at their best after stormy weather! A dinghy moored on the Oxford Canal at Thrupp near Kidlington in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford Canal, 77 miles long, was constructed in the late 1700s and was opened in stages between 1774 and 1790. The aim was to connect Coventry and its nearby coalfields with Oxford, the Thames and eventually London. It's a contour canal meaning it follows the line of the hills rather than using flights of locks to climb them, resulting in fewer locks overall. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The brook flowing through the fields separating the villages of Tidmarsh and Sulham in West Berkshire. The footpath leads walkers across the water by way of a wooden bridge. This is the view looking west towards Tidmarsh on a winter's day. A little further along the path is Tidmarsh Mill on the River Pang, once the home of Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington. An elegant footbridge over the River Kennet next to Greenham Lock near Newbury, Berkshire. The bridge forms the entrance to a boatyard and dry dock. This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the section between Reading and Newbury was opened The remainder of the Kennet and Avon to join Bristol and Reading was built between 1794 and 1810. A narrowboat negotiating the River Avon just upstream from its meeting with the Severn at Tewkwesbury, Gloucestershire. This has been produced as a digital painting using chalk effects. Just further upstream is the Severn-Avon lock which enables boats to join the main course of the Avon and continue up to Stratford-on-Avon. Tewkesbury grew up at this point as the meeting of the two rivers was strategically important for a town with a major abbey. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The watermill at Hambleden on the River Thames between Henley and Marlow in Buckinghamshire. This picturesque, Grade 2 listed old mill has a long history, having been mentioned in the Domesday Book when the the rental value was £1 per year! Its location is the appropriately named Mill End, where the fast flowing Hambleden Bourne discharges into the Thames. Immediately below it is the weir, one of the longest on the Thames. From here the Chiltern Hills gradually rise to the north. Nikon D7000

A fishing boat from the Hastings fishing fleet being pushed into the water by a rusting tractor. When it returns it will be pulled up on to the beach by winch. Fishing boats have been beached on this area of shingle known as The Stade, an Anglo-Saxon word for landing place, for over a thousand years and this is now the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Britain.

Looking over the surrounding moat to Caerphilly Castle (Castell Caerffili) in Caerphilly, Wales. This shows the leaning tower - leaning since 1648! Built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare in order to secure this part of Wales from being taken over by the Welsh leader Llewellyn, building was begun in 1268 and it was immediately attacked! Building was then recommenced in 1271 - the largest castle in ground area in Wales! Its surrounding moat and lakes are now a haven for wildlife.

The Kennet and Avon Canal seen from the historic site of West Mills in Newbury, Berkshire, England. In times past this was a hive of activity with the mills drawing their power from the River Kennet. Several wiers and sluices show where they once were. The Kennet and Avon Canal, constructed in the early 1700s to connect Bristol and London via Reading, would have been the means of transporting the mills' raw materials and end products. Now. after restoration in the later 1900s, it is busy with leisure boats.

An excursion boat taking sightseers along the River Thames, passing the 12th century church of All Saints at Bisham in Berkshire, England. This stretch of the river is famous as a centre for rowing. Next door to the church is the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre and just downstream is Marlow in Buckinghamshire with its rowing clubs.

The funicular railway takes skiers and tourists to the top station at 3,600 feet, not far from the summit of Cairngorm Mountain in the Cairngorm National Park near Aviemore, Scotland. One car ascends the mountain as another descends. Cairngorm Mountain is popular with skiers in the winter and tourists and hillwalkers in the summer.
