Oxford Canal Pillows

Whilst it was snowing I took this picture of the oxford canal,looking through Newbold tunnel Bridge 49 towards fools bridge 48 and boats in the distance. Newbold tunnel is a quarter of a mile long build in 1820s when they shortened the oxford canal. The original tunnel ran under St. Botolphs church yard in Newbold on Avon the entrance to the tunnel can still be seen. Canon 600D

A dinghy moored on the Oxford Canal at Thrupp near Kidlington in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford Canal, 77 miles long, was constructed in the late 1700s and was opened in stages between 1774 and 1790. The aim was to connect Coventry and its nearby coalfields with Oxford, the Thames and eventually London. The bridge spans the waterway and leads to Shipton village and the canalside church of Holy Cross. The canal was the brainchild of the engineer James Brindley who died before the start of construction. A canalside scene at Shipton-on-Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford canal here is overlooked by the parish church of Holy Cross. The church and village predate the canal by several centuries - the River Cherwell being the only waterway then! There has been a church here since the C12th but after a number of additions it was demolished in 1831 and the present Gothic Revival one built. The Oxford Canal is considered one of the most scenic canals in Britain. This is the Cathiron to Brinklow stretch near Rugby Warwickshire.The route between Coventry and Rugby is on a level with no locks, apart from the stop lock at the junction. Much of this section of the canal was straightened out in the 1820s, and remains of the original less direct route can still be seen in places. Taken on a sunny day winter of 2012. Canon 600 D

Boats passing through the bridge take a sharp left turn to moor or continue on the way to Banbury. This part of the Oxford Canal opened in 1788 and largely follows the course of the River Cherwell. The stone bridge (No. 220) crossing the Oxford Canal at Shipton-on-Cherwell. This is one of the stone 'Brindley' bridges named after James Brindley the original supervising engineer of the canal. In front is a single lock gate. This is a 'stop lock' for isolating part of the canal for mainenance or if there is a danger of flooding. The bridge connects the village of Shipton on the right with farmland on the left as we view it. From here the canal continues through Thrupp to Oxford itself.
