I might still break out some watercolors, but I need some supplies before I do that, so I may return to this in a couple weeks, but for now, I'm happy with the turnout, especially considering this was my first time attempting a Heron. I wasn't trying to copy the photo(credit to myself, as I encountered this gentle giant on a painting day at Ringling by the canal and managed to snap a couple of pictures. One of the most unforgettable moments I'd ever had at Ringling and I love it.) because, as my Illustration I professor used to tell us: "You're an artist, not a camera! Heron, any of about 60 species of long-legged wading birds, classified in the family Ardeidae (order Ciconiiformes) and generally including several species usually called egrets. The Ardeidae also include the bitterns (subfamily Botaurinae).

As the sun sets and the sky turns a deep shade of orange and purple, a heron stands at the edge of a tranquil pond. Its long, slender legs are firmly planted in the mud, and its neck is stretched upward, as if reaching for the last rays of sunlight. The bird's gray feathers are beautifully illuminated by the soft glow of the setting sun, giving it an almost mystical appearance. As the sky begins to darken, the heron suddenly takes flight, its powerful wings slicing through the still evening air as it gracefully glides above the water. It's a sight to behold, as the heron and the dusk create a serene and peaceful scene.

This mama heron had 8 little chicks she was desperately trying to keep us away from. She succeeded, too... I never got close enough for a really good image of the babies.
