A huge tabular iceberg protrudes from the sea ice about the height of a 10 story building, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The light during the night when there is 24 hour sunlight is very special providing dramatic lighting and colour on the sea ice and in the clouds. It is like having dusk, dawn, sunrise and sunset all rolled into one. If the sun is behind clouds the colour is often muted and subtle. Canon EOS, zoom lens.

Adelie Procession (#3 in a Sequence) showing a group of Adelie Penguins (pygoscelis adeliae) gathering together to cross a frozen pool in the pressure ridges in the sea ice at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica. Because this frozen pool was different from the regular environment they were very diffident about crossing it. It was as if they thought it was open water, rather than frozen, and that the risk of a Leopard Seal may have been present. Close to shore huge tabular icebergs are stuck in the fast ice. These icebergs are about the size of a ten story building above the fast ice and about 6 to 7 times that below. They are new icebergs having just calved from claciers or ice tongues in the previous summer and have got iced in during the winter. As the summer develops the fast ice will at least partially melt and the icebergs will be set free to travel around the Antarctic Continent until they eventually melt. Emperor Penguin, Aptenodytes forsteri, arriving home at midnight to return to the rookery on the fast ice at Cape Roget, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The Emperor Penguins launch themselves out of the water at high speed and land in a tobogganing position, quickly standing to walk across the ice. Emperor Penguins, Aptenodytes forsteri, leaving home on the fast ice at about 1am to go fishing, Cape Roget, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The penguins make their way to the edge of the ice from the rookery. They seem to stand in groups of about 20, peacefully waiting for those groups in front to leave. When a group enters the water the rest all shuffle forward. Because there may be a Leopard Seal waiting form them in the water they take some time before the first penguin takes the plange; and then the whole group dives in very quickly. Canon EOS, zoom lens. Zodiac cruising among the icebergs between 11pm and 2am at Cape Roget, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The wall of this iceberg is about the same height as a 10 story building. From a Jumbo Jet flying at 10,000 feet looking down on the Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica. The mountain range stretches between the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea the entire length of Antarctica, hence the name. With a total length of about 3,500 km, the Transantarctic Mountains are one of the longest mountain ranges on Earth. The 100–300 km wide range forms the boundary between East Antarctica and West Antarctica. The Antarctic holds the greatest reserves of fresh water anywhere on earth. Unfortunately due to the terrain there is nothing to give a sense of scale in this image.
