My interpretation of a cross carpet page from the Lindisfarne Gospels. Done to see if I could, it represents about a month's work to complete.

Sited atop the volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig, Lindisfarne Castle is one of the most distinct and picturesque features of the Holy Island, Northumberland, England and can be seen for many miles around. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, it was built in 1550 in defence of the realm against attack by Scotland and in persuit of their Spanish allies. Constructed of stone taken from the Priory the most interesting recent feature (1997) has been the re-facing of north-facing walls which featured the use of Yak hair in the render. The castle is excellently maintained by the National Trust and the view from the top truly magnificent - it is also unique. BEST VIEWED LARGER

Lindisfarne or Holy Island as it is often referred to is located just off the Northumberland Coastline and is only accessible by road via a causeway that is visible at low tide. A small island containing a fishing harbour and a castle, it holds a prominent position in the religious heritage of the area. When on the island, looking west to the mainland, if lucky, you witness some great sunsets.

Using old boats as sheds goes back centuries on the east coast of England. The Holy Island sheds are well known and are probably the best surviving examples.

Based upon an iconic page from the Lindisfarne Gospels, the illuminated manuscript from the early mediaeval period, this is not an exact facsimile but my interpretation and given a monochrome treatment

The Roman Empire had spread Christianity into England, but due to its decline, paganism was seeing a resurgence in Northern England. _St. Oswald of Northumbria_ had been living at the Iona monastery as a king in exile since 616 A.D. There he converted to Christianity and was baptized. In 634 he gained the crown of Northumbria, and was determined to bring Christianity to the mostly pagan people there. The small island north of England, on a Tuesday, June 8, 793, the so-called Vikings, with the first recorded attack on the quiet monastery of Lindisfarne, in Northumbria, began the Viking age in the monastery founded by San Aidan. There are few data that have of that assault in terms of authors and victims, simply, the attackers arrived, massacred the monks and took away everything that had value. From there, the following was the conquest of those lands, longed for by all, rich in resources and part of paradise on earth. In the background the quiet castle monastery, approaching, a drakkar, the dreaded boat in the whole island.

The poem was written by co-founder of the Northumbria Community, Andy Raine and Neil Arnold. It tells of how Aidan would ask people if they knew about God. If they said 'no' he would work beside them & tell them about Jesus, if they said 'yes' he would encourage them to love God more.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne Fishing Rope After leaving the main road you are greeted with a tidal causeway which brings you to Holy Island and this road keeps it cut off from the rest of the world for at least half of the day or night.
