PIER 39 SAN FRANCISCO

The sea lions camped out in PIER 39's West Marina in San Francisco, USA, have been endearingly coined, "Sea Lebrities". The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990 shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. At first they numbered from 10-50, but due to a plentiful herring supply, available dock space and the marina’s protected environment, the population grew to more than 300 within a few months. Each winter, the population can increase up to 900 sea lions, most of which are male. During the summer months, the sea lions migrate south to the Channel Islands for breeding season, but in recent years a small group stays year-round at PIER 39's K-Dock. BEST VIEWED LARGER

Handcrafted in Italy, the Fun Fair Carousel is intricately hand-painted with famous San Francisco landmarks and the popular California sea lions at PIER 39. The carousel features 1,800 twinkling LED lights and 30+ animals to ride. Throughout the ride, patrons hear traditional organ music and see PIER 39’s bustling promenade. I just enjoyed the shot ~ that's the big kid in me...!!! :D ;-)

Sealions at Gate 39 San Francisco Bay, California. A few California sea lions began “hauling out” on PIER 39’s K-Dock shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco in October 1989. PIER 39 Marina proved to be an ideal living situation for the sea lions. Within a few short months, the number of sea lions grew to more than 300 and hit an all-time record of 1,701 in November 2009.
