Plough Monday is an old British harvest tradition that marks the start of the agricultural season. The day was a celebration for farm workers. They toured villages with a plow, singing and dancing their way through. What was the objective? Raising money. And if you weren’t a sport, chances were revelers would plow up your gardens. In case that happened, participants usually blackened their faces with soot to avoid being recognized. The unique festival all but died out in the 18th Century. Thankfully, places like East Anglia and East Midlands still keep the tradition alive.

The Starry Plough banner (Irish: An Camchéachta) is a flag which was originally used by the Irish Citizen Army, a socialist Irish republican movement, and subsequently adopted by other Irish political organizations. The original Starry Plough was designed by George William Russell for the Irish Citizen Army and showed silver stars on a green background. The flag depicts an asterism (an identified part) of the constellation Ursa Major, called The Plough (or "Starry Plough") in Ireland and Britain, the Big Dipper in North America, and various other names worldwide.

Plough love into earth

This is a photo taken at night from Pentwyn Reservoir looking towards Pen y Fan and Corn Du. The Plough or Big Dipper is right above it.

A disk plough has at last arrived to till the soil.... last year we managed to get our hands on a cultivator shortly after pruning when the ground was soft - the ground has dried now - many hrs of tractor work ahead to catch up... Meanwhile this makes an interesting geometric design. Magpie Springs a rustic vineyard farm very close to McLaren Vale in the Adelaide Hills Wine Region. The property has some of the oldest vines in the Southern Adelaide Hills. Our vineyard, homestead, art gallery and cellar door in the centre of the Fleurieu Peninsula is nestled back from B34, the main road from Hahndorf to Willunga Hill. We are half way from Adelaide to Victor Harbor. Our vines, organically grown since 2013 have been under a restoration proc...

In creating this design, I was inspired by the beautiful Toile fabrics.
